Was it only your hard drive that failed? Just buy a new one for 50 bucks {300 gigs easily} and then buy the win 7 os for a hundred, bam, fixed

Or go for Linux if you can't afford Windows

should have mentioned that the laptop is obsolete and litterly falling appart so its not just a matter of replacing the hd..done that twice in the past year. we already considered repair. and decided it would be cheaperr and easyer to buy a new system. specily sice my current one seems to be crap

Although they have been getting better at it, laptops still aren't a good choice if you're looking for a gaming machine. There are quite a few laptops out there with the hardware sufficient to run modern games, but they always run at a much, much higher price than a similarly spec'ed desktop.

I'd say only go for a gaming laptop if mobility is a legitimate issue. Or maybe if you only play old/really old games.

Why don't you buy one of these?

They're good enough for looking at porn :D
You'll just have to continue using your old keyboard and screen.

get a custom computer...that way you can upgrade what you want, when you want. I purchased one for $1000 2 years ago and never looked back.

There's a good selection. If you want to do gaming you'd probably want to look for something with a discrete graphics card (Radeon or GeForce) as opposed to an Intel graphics accelerator--though it really depends on what kind of game you want to play, I suppose. You're sure that you want to get a laptop? I just ask because you can often get parts for a desktop for cheaper than the cost of the laptop.

Im rather technologically retarded but I hear a company called alienware (yes? No? Close?) Makes some pretty win setups... Custom computers or whatever. Could be worth it to scope out!

Alienware is ridiculously overpriced, that's the problem.

You can get an Asus computer that does the same things an Alienware does for about half the price. And Asus is a high build quality brand.

I'm fairly certain that Asus also makes a cheap netbook that costs about 100 bucks.

I don't know what to say if you've had trouble with Asus other than that they're generally quite good when it comes to build quality. My G74 is holding up much, much better than the Gateway that I had.

I'd suggest though if you're looking for a lower price that you don't go for gaming laptops unless you do a lot of intensive gaming. Unless you're looking to play cutting-edge games on high settings, you can reasonably go for a non-gaming laptop as long as you make sure that it can ventilate well. (That's the one thing that puts Asus's RoG series above others, in my opinion--they've got excellent ventilation.)

But a non-gaming laptop with a discrete graphics card can do if you're not looking to spend a ton of money. Newegg is a very good site to look for laptops, as it's more tech-oriented than Amazon, and it can't hurt to check Best Buy, since they'll sometimes have deals from manufacturers that let them sell things cheaper than other places.

Even just buying a prebuilt desktop can save money over a laptop; something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220138 would probably be about 400-500 dollars more as a laptop. On top of that, desktops are more reliable than laptops, since there's less wear on the parts and the parts don't have to be miniaturized so they can be sturdier. And there's the benefit of being able to upgrade. The only extra thing you need is a screen, and you can get a good one for about 100 bucks, maybe less.

That's what I was saying about non-gaming laptops. They're not going to have the same performance but they'll be capable of playing most of the same things and they'll be a lot cheaper.
