Reason: I'm making this BUR to solve a problem with the growth tag that's long been bugging me. Basically, too many people tag body_size_growth as growth, and the way I see it, this is because of two factors:

1. Growth being used as a family tag in it's current state nebulous at best, since it means growing extra body parts.
2. People casually tagging on here aren't aware that there's a difference, and they'll just tag a character increasing their size as "growth" and move on.

I know this might brush off as reactionary with some of you for me to make a BUR to completely shake up the system to make it easier for people ignorant to the wikis or whatever, but with this BUR I'm hoping to repurpose that tag family to more accurately represent what its advertising with growing extra anatomy and body parts. This family will also utilize the underused body_part_growth, which will also imply anatomy growth. Other kinds of growth (e.g. muscle growth, fur and hair etc.) will imply only anatomy growth because it refers to specific characteristics of the body as opposed to the creation of new body parts and limbs. Update: changed to sprouting. See below

When this BUR is implimented, there should be two trees should end up looking like this:

Updated

we do need a better term for what *_growth currently covers, nad I don't think using body_part_growth or anatomy_growth really helps that at all.

I don't think body_part_growth or anatomy_growth will be any clearer than growth, since the issue is with the term growth itself. Adding body_part_ or anatomy_ to the front doesn't help distinguish growing an existing thing vs growing a new thing. The term expansion is ostensibly used to distinguish it, but it's not clear either and leads to confusion for certain kinds of growth (it gives an impression of the thing staying roughly the same but just expanding like a balloon being filled with air, e.g. a human ear turning into a bigger human ear would be expansion, but not a human ear turning into a bigger wolf ear).

My goal basically is to phase out growth because that's the problem, by adding anatomy_growth and the subset of body_part_growth, it can then railroad the uploader to be more specific about what is growING. Things growing like body hair, muscles, scales etc all relate to characteristics of the body, so they would be kept seperate from body_part_growth, which focuses more on the creation of body parts, which is what growth currently implicates.

I understand your point about expansion, and I'm open to suggestions on how to better work this BUR.

What about calling these tags growing_new_*? It should avoid confusion with the expansion tags.

The term sprouting_ has been suggested the previous times this has come up.

Still not a fan of using a sprouting_* tag

I understand all-too-well the pain of mistagged growth, but the problem that causes the mistagging is the word "growth" so we can't keep it as-is or no amount of attempted reorganization will do anything.

Seconding growing_new_* because it is extremely clear about what it actually means unlike "growth" which could mean either growing new or growing bigger.

I'd vote sprouting_*, it seems like its purpose should be clear enough from the name alone, and it's also pretty concise... unless there's some ambiguity or contradiction that I'm not thinking of.

Okay, since people are happy with sprouting, let's go with that then.

Revised Part 2:imply sprouting > anatomy_growth
imply antennae_growth -> sprouting

imply hair_growth -> anatomy_growth
imply muscle_growth -> anatomy_growth
imply scale_growth -> anatomy_growth
imply whisker_growth -> anatomy_growth
alias body_size_growth -> growing

imply growing -> size_transformation

The tag family structure is still the same. Does anyone have a better name than anatomy_growth?

Err, I meant like sprouting_tail instead of tail_growth. Just "sprouting" as an umbrella tag seems unnecessary and weird.

Yes, perfect!

I'm good with sprouting_*, though we should also have growing_new_* tags as aliases for sprouting_* for the sake of discoverability for people familiar with growth/growing.

The aliases in the latest reply look good to me.

alias [...]_growth -> sprouting_[...]

This would cause mistags for instances where growth was used for something that's not sprouting. E.g. genital_growth for a penis/balls that exist and grow bigger is not sprouting_genitalia.

And there's cases where the distinction between sprouting and growth are vague a lot of the time (e.g. claws, which can be depicted as sprouting from under fingernails, or being a growth of fingernails themselves, and there's not enough detail to tell which is depicted; or snouts, which is really just an extension of the nose/mouth area that flat faces have, making it more like growth of an existing thing rather than sprouting a new thing), meaning you can't always tell whether something is sprouting or growing. For multi-page sequences, things become even murkier since each post should be tagged on its own (e.g. a transformation starts on one page where a tail sprouts, then on a later page the tail already exists from the previous page and grows bigger; people are likely to mistag the same thing on each page).

So what you're saying is, this needs a mass update instead of an alias?

Neither. It shouldn't be aliased since they're different things, and the ones that need changing need to be done by hand since some posts will have it tagged to mean sprouting and some won't.

Leaving it alone isn't a viable option either since the exact same contradiction occurs anyway. So it begs the question what's the move then?

I have one possible solution. You can split the list into two seperate tag groups into things that definitely are sprouting and don't leave any room for ambiguity (e.g. sprouting an extra head or arm etc) from ones that are and leave their names unchanged.
