the 'echidna' in question refers to a beast in greek mythology who mothered the vast majority of beasts mentioned in tales, such as the chimera, the nemean lion and the sphinx

Not quite: monotremes. Going on the best evidence, monotremes diverged ~220 Mya from our lineage, and the placentals and marsupials more recently, ~145 to ~65 Mya. More sort-of distant cousins of most beasts than the mother of all monsters.
