Hey guys, regardless of what you may have seen proposed in the News recently, our Tag What You See rule is still unchanged from this here. Remember, the only recent change was to allow using external information for tagging character NAMES only, NOT gender or virtually anything else. PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE RULE! Thanks! :)

I quit posting my renders on this site because of such comments and the annoying downvotes. 3D are is not as easy as a lot of ppl think it is, seriously. It can take as much time, if not more, than a 2D one, not counting actual render times.

I'm sure both of you are spending at least as much or more time than your fellow 2D artists on your work.
However, the issue (in my opinion) is that you're in the uncanny valley. Consider stylizing your art to get on the left side of the uncanny valley. When people say "derp faces," what they're seeing is that your art looks very close to a human face -- which is indicative of your skill -- but there are subtle differences that throw off the facial processing. Consider that even multi-million dollar movies don't always get it right.
For anyone not already acquainted with the term:

i get what your saying, its hate to get out of the uncanny side if 3d just becuse the fact that its photo real looking.
and i've been playing with making them more "cartoon" , but i also have a bunch of human models and try to make all of them match. what i can try to do is to take away some of the real details , that tends to make them look more toon . also my thing is i like my style ,and you tend to get stuck in a mode and hard to get out of.
i just hate the "that face" and i "threw up a little", thsats not constuctive, wheni see pics on here that have furrys eating others nasty puffed out viginas and blood and just gross matter. i find that conment kind of troubling. thats all .
really im not a furry only artist. and i tend to make my stuff likable by the "non furry" fan

Thanks, that's a well-thought-out response. Good luck!

Guys, I really don't think that vic's work falling into the "uncanny valley" is the problem. Rather, there's something just a bit… off, regarding the way the faces are modeled. I wish I could tell you exactly what it is, but I can't.
Take a look at Neurodyne's piece: 141814
Now, it's not shaded, true, but it's so well modeled that even when finished, one probably wouldn't get the same "creepy" vibe that folks keep complaining about with vic and other's work.

Since you appear to be speaking to me specifically, I will answer directly: I think the faces look horrible. I do not like them, and I said so. Comments are useful for expressing opinions, as are votes, so I did. I am sorry if you do not like my opinion, but I am not changing it.

More specifically, the girl's hair is a mess, and their noses look like someone smashed clay balls onto the ends of their faces. I also think the white rabbit's breasts are too big, but I recognize that is just a personal preference.

Thats cool you can have a that opinion. The thing is I don't mind people telling what's wrong with my works because it helps me get better. I just get no help from "that face" if you know me you can tell me about anything an if its makes sense I will use it. I just think some people just don't like 3d stuff and thats ok .
is get more help from what acolyte magnes and dobieshot said . i think im at the limit of what i can make the model do with just Dials im working on the nose because that is the single most thing that bothers me too. but the nose is more of a texture problem then shape, be a person that doesn't have bunch of money the photoshop bridge that will help with that is way to much for me right now.
well i just got mad because of the i just threw up comment , thats not fair i know people don't like my stuff and i can take a joke and comments or i wouldn't post them here

Poser/DAZ studio
whichever they are using, but they are premade models that someone else made, and they try to manipulate them and combine them with other models using the very limited options they have available.
all in all, I doubt vic made those models and therefore I hate people that do that. It ruins the reputation of "real" 3D artists, and makes everyone else think that we are all using those crappy programs.

Well, to my defense I made the custom morphs using the deformers and the editors that daz give you, the texture I sat down and made in photoshop from nothing , the models are made with deformers that provided in daz studios .
so they are pulled and squished in the way i want. i don't have a few grand to spend on a "real" 3d program. and again , and don't know how to express this anymore strongly then I stated before! never ever said that i am a 3d artist i just do it for fun! i draw thats my thing , but i will not post my drawing on line. i care about those and i have seen these pics all over the web so it will just kill me to see my drawing that i spend hours on everywhere. also you guys that are "true 3d artist" ya you're not doing anything different. you still taking a premade shape (primitive) and moving it around to get what you want. i've played with Carrara and blender before.
i post these pic here because this site is about the most real in the comments that i come across no one says o you good if your pic sucks
I make styrene foam displays for a living and I know how to take a block of foam thats 4x6x8 and turn it into something, so just because im not using a few hundred dollar program that doesn't mean I suck at art. again im just doing this for fun!!

Wow. You know, most of the time, people upload someone else's artwork. I don't even look to see who uploads a piece or who created the art; I don't /usually/ look to see what their past art looked like, how they've progressed, etc. I usually just look and make a judgment of whether I like what I see, thinking the artist will never hear my comments one way or the other. So, as a result of that mindset, I didn't attempt to offer anything helpful.
I have to commend anyone who jumps into art, tries to develop a talent, and strives to get better. I absolutely respect that. Keep at it!

That's where you are wrong. There are models you can download for any 3D software, but most users create their own models starting with the first line. I for example is what i do. Poser/DAZ Studio does not give you sufficient tools to create models from the very first line. You need premade models to begin anything. The models that are made for those programs come from other 3D modeling programs such as 3ds max or maya.
You can toy around with Poser/DAZ, but remember that they are not truly any 3D modeling software. As for me I tend to have something against Poser/DAZ, but that's just me.

I support the artist's decision to remove the Nightmare Fuel tag. It wasn't intended to be such, and adding it out of opinion is just rude.
