I'm going to go ahead and nitpick.
Since pokeballs are internally tagged to only work with their originally caught pokemon, this would never happen. Even if he was full on pokemon and that was a new ball it would need to be thrown, or the button on the front would need to be pressed, to activate it's capture mode.

And yes, it's an experimental new pokeball, you won't find it on Bulbapedia, and you don't know how it's internally wired or how exactly it's supposed to function. Just sayin' :P
