星方武侠アウトロースター Seihō Bukyō Autorō Sutā
A mixed media series from Japan originally published in Ultra Jump magazine in the mid to late 1990's. No official English text version was published, though the series was translated into Chinese, German, and Italian. In the late 90's a 26 episode anime series was released and later picked up for worldwide distribution by Bandai Entertainment. The series reached North American audiences through the Toonami block in early 2001 and later again on Adult Swim in 2002 on the Cartoon Network.
Billed as a kind of "space opera" or "space western" the story revolves around the exploits of Jack-of-All-Trades Gene Starwind and his partner James "Jim" Hawking. Gene has dreams of "making it big" in space as a pilot, though he suffers from space sickness easily.
A chance encounter with a fleeing pirate leads the pair to a special navigator, Melfina, who in turn leads them to a prototype ship, the XGP15A-II later dubbed "Outlaw Star". However the ship and Melfina are stolen property from both the dread Kei Pirates and Space Forces. Additionally the outlaw brothers known as the MacDougall Brothers are after the ship and Melfina.
