Mixed-media creation by Humikane Shimada that began as a serial appearing in magazine columns and was later adopted into light novels, manga, an anime OVA, an anime series, and various video games.
The story revolves around young women who equip machines to their legs (Striker Units) that allow them to fly (in the case of air units) or traverse the ground (in the case of ground units) at incredible speeds. The Strike Witches are skilled magic users and their magical abilities summon forth the animal characteristics of their animal familiar, giving them a tail and/or ears appropriate to the animal.
The story is set in an alternate earth where an alien force known as Neuroi have invaded during the events of World War II. With a new enemy to focus their attentions on hostilities between nations are abandoned to combat the common foe. The Neuroi were able to obliterate large masses of the planet including most of North and South America and the Indo-China landmass.
The franchise's main media focus is on the members of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing whose main objective is the defense of the Western European Conglomerate. Their roster consists of the following members:
