"Wolf" commonly refers to the Gray Wolf ("Canis lupus"). (The red wolf "Canis rufus" may be considered a subspecies.) The gray golf is the largest wild member of the Canidae family with a range across the northern hemisphere. Wolves share a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Wolves frequently feature in the folklore and mythology of human cultures that overlap with the wolf's range, both positively and negatively. The Ethiopian wolf ("Canis simensis") is a relative.
