Tumblr removed access to RAW images (and why you should care)

In category: General

PLEASE NO DELETERINO...this is not just another topic asking what happened, this is a CALL TO ACTION. I am well aware of the other thread, but I thought this is so important it deserves its own thread.

So...in case you didn't know for a long time there was a URL hack that allowed us to grab the highest-quality images from Tumblr. We called these "raw" images specifically because the URL hack involved changing the "1280" number at the end of an image's URL to "raw".

Well now that access has been suddenly and unceremoniously removed...you can test it yourself by going to this link:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/6194c0fccbeed6d705f94a571f1f8424/tumblr_otunei3rmG1uy441zo2_raw.jpg

Access denied...this means every image from Tumblr will be capped at 1280x1920 and compressed...meaning the images you see on this site will probably have a significant drop in quality.

I encourage everyone to make tickets to Tumblr support asking them to bring back RAW images: www.tumblr.com/support

Thanks, and hopefully we can bring back RAW images if they see enough people care!

Let's just harass the ever living fuck out of them >:P Maybe we can get users from other sites like e6 like derpibooru and then they'll have a huge group of people upset at them. Hopefully that'd make them change their stance on access to raw full size images

I see it's starting to take notice on Tumblr. I already asked them about it so I then asked them again why they did it and gave them reasons why they should keep the Raw image format a few hours ago. Still waiting for a reply.

Hey if you want to copy/paste this message on those sites that would be great. Honestly I've hardly ever been on them and I don't have accounts there.

I pretty much did the same. They gave me a canned response so I replied back and asked for a more specific answer.

Images being 1280px, I don't mind too much. Images being JPEG now especially when Tumblr was one of the only social media webistes that kept PNGs as PNGs? That makes me incredibly mad.
