Topic: Does this MAD magazine comic count as commercial work?

Posted under General

I don't know, but they missed the chance to use "everypony" in one of the text boxes.

that Uncle Sam pic seems rather fitting imo given the current state of things around the world.

Unless that's a free issue of MAD Magazine (which it clearly isn't), it's commercial material... I don't see why normal rules wouldn't apply.

Send them a message asking if it's okay to post it.

If HuffPost can ask for permission, so can you. Maybe they will even send you a higher resolution version if you ask nicely!

It's a free preview of the content, though.
We allow that, I think.

It says "Courtesy of MAD Magazine". I think that implies an agreement between Huffington Post and MAD Magazine.

"Dear MAD Magazine, I'm an unnamed perv who uploads shit to pic website e621.net that specializes in porn between humans, animals, aliens, monsters, fairytale characters and any imaginable combination of thereof. I'm fairly confident that the assorted pervs on said website would be a perfect audience for comic "My Little Phony" you've recently pre-released (and by extension, also for your great magazine). Therefore, I want to ask your permission to post the comic there. XOXO, ConsciousDonkey."

Yeeeaaah... fat chance.

Oh well, the comic would just lead to unnecessary drama here, anyway.

I dunno, aren't they the kinds of people to be all for it?

Just do it. There are (were?) some freaks at MAD Magazine. And it's no worse than curtsibling art was, before the cleansing.

Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to ask.
I'm sure that they're used to getting questions like that, and it'd be interesting to see what their reply is...

It might even end up in the letter column.

what's the worst than could come of this? something furry related appearing in the news...again? meh, i'm sure this fandom has dealt with worse by now.

So just for the heck of it, I've e-mailed MAD Magazine for permission. I will keep you posted what their reply (if any) will be.

I used considerably less crude language than in my previous post however, so I highly doubt it will appear anywhere on their site.

You didn't emphasize the porn did you? We're an art archive for all sorts of "furry" art, be it comedy, political, cute, or lewd, not only lewd.

What's done is done. Only thing to do now is wait for response/non-response.

Actually, I emphasized that lots of MLP fans come here, will like the MAD comic and may buy the magazine as a result.

Well, if they research the site you're not gonna be wrong, but...

Most of the staff frequents various comic conventions. They've seen enough fans and bronies to know what to expect.

Did they see enough hentai to see where this site goes?

Regardless, I am curious about their response. Have we ever had a comic featuring paid content hosted here with permission by the publisher?

Pretty sure we've been given lower resolution copies to host here, but never heard of getting full size, no. And I'm not completely sure about the lower res, either.
