Topic: My random ramblings

Posted under Art Talk

Hello everyone, I doubt you know me but I upgraded to a drawing tablet when I previously used a 3DS (yeah, I know) to draw. Well I promise to bring higher quality images akin to my latest art piece (and maybe more quality as I learn?) And I'm here to discuss and receive input for my ideas. I have multiple, though.

I made a Patreon for NSFW stuff (there is a SFW one also) and I'm going to be rolling out more art. I think it'd be fun to design a character to kick off my works, so I do have something in mind but I think I can get a greater idea if it can be finalized with others. So here are my ideas/questions:

1. What sort of mythological animal/creature (I plan to have feral content for now) would you like to see a rendition of? I had in mind a hippogriff, so an equine and avian that make a neat combination would be a good spin on it. It won't just be a hippogriff, so a dragon/griffon/serpent or anything that is appealing can be the key for another character design.

2. Do you think I'd fare well on Patreon? I am charging per illustration, because I may or may not disappear in terms of art creation. I can give a link if you wish to look, and I would be fine with input or advice on almost anything.

3. Should I worry about paid content (think exclusive art packs through a purchase, not just Patron only stuff) at this point? I know my art isn't the greatest, but it isn't simply stick figures either.

So that is what I needed to say, or ask.

1. I'm not much into fantasy so let's go to 2.

2. Much of Patreon success comes from your content and from networking. It's pretty easy for porn artists to get further on Patreon than SFW artists because sex sells. It doesn't really matter the amount of skill involved as I have seen plenty of subpar work get rewarded over SFW content of double the skill involved.

Networking is also a huge factor, as if people don't know about the Patreon they probably won't pledge to it. It helps to have accounts in several places and link where appropriate, and for other people to pass the link along.

3. I haven't seen your work so I don't know what to tell you. I'm speaking from my own experience.

As for all questions, my answer is that's fair.

1. I could also go a real animal route and have actual species that exist making appearances in art. The best part about drawing is that the sky's the limit.

2. I know linking does a lot of good but I don't quite know where to start, however would Inkbunny and/or FurAffinity be a decent place? I am unsure about anywhere else (even here) because I want to come off as an actual user and not just an advertisement.

3. I see what you mean, and I apologize for having little work to show for it, but here is a picture:

This is what I've done with my tablet, if you need more resources then let me know.

You could go halfway and draw an extinct animal.

Another idea is drawing animals that the other artist don't. There are many animals that aren't represented here at all.

1. I guess I'll just be blunt and go with "I don't really look at furry art". Feel free to listen to whoever else might comment instead.

2. You could try there. See if other people/followers might be willing to pass the links along. Social media, such as Twitter and Tumblr, can also be helpful. I personally get next to nowhere with these outlets or from Patreon, but maybe you'll have better luck.

3. I don't think you will get very far with things like artpacks at your current skill level.

Let's talk business!

If you want your Patreon to be successful, you need two things:
1. An audience
2. Advertisements

Having a Patreon is like having your own brand. And just like any other brand, having an audience and advertisements is a key part of your business. I've seen peeps start Patreons without either of those and they either barely top $40, only have 2-6 backers in after months of being active, or it would fail entirely. And then they would place the blame on Patreon for their lack of success. No, they just don't know how to do business, to put it bluntly.

For any business, you NEED an audience and advertisements. The audience are potential future backers. What do you make? Furry related art. Well then lucky for you, the furry fandom is your target audience.

As for advertisements, people need to know that you have a Patreon. They aren't gonna wonder over to your Patreon out of nowhere. You need advertisements to inform them about your business. There's good advertising and bad advertising. Good advertising is making interesting, eye-catching ads. Some businesses use humor, creative designs, witty banter, etc, something that relates to your audience. The whole point of advertising is to attract the audience to your business. Now, bad advertising is spamming your business everywhere, even to people that aren't in your target audience. Advertising to people not in your target audience will actually hurt you because those people are not interested in your business (they WILL let you know about it, trust me) but you ignore their statements. You will soon develop a bad reputation for your business and then the reputation will affect your chance to attract people in your target audience.

I can expand on the concept of business in more detail if you like but it would be a long read so I'll stop myself :V
