Topic: Tag 'xenomorph' should not be exclusively associated with 'Alien Franchise'

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Xenomorphs exist in several forms, and also in many other forms of media, not in one specific franchise.
So when I want to tag an image with a 'xenomorph', I don't want the tag 'alien(franchise)' automatically added to it, because it has nothing to do with the Alien movie.

Strictly speaking, "Xenomorph" originated as a Geology term, but beyond the Aliens from the alien franchise, I don't know of any other "XenoMORPHS" I know WH40K uses "Xeno" to reference anything foreign and inhuman, but then again "Xeno" itself means foreigner or stranger. Hrm.

As I understand it, xenomorph refers to a specific type of alien, just as Vulcan or Ewok do. I think alien might be a better tag for what you want.

On the one hand, "xenomorph[ic]" etymologically all the way back to ancient-Greek roots (although I don't think the word was actually used until geology started doing it), and as such has a firm and specific meaning that has nothing at all to do with that movie.

That said, only a vanishingly-small number of people would ever use that word for anything other than the Alien. So even if it's not necessarily 100% precise or accurate, for the sake of searching (which is the purpose of the site), it should be used to refer to the Alien, and whatever doesn't should be tagged speficially, like "xenomorph_(other_franchise_or_topic_here)".

post #321312 is the one in question. I don't see why this post needs the xenomorph tag. The wiki says pretty clearly that the tag refers to the species from Alien, and I can't think of anything else that really would fit with the name 'xenomorph'.

That's because there is no xenomorph in that image

While I will go with what you all say, I do not think that my bringing this topic up in the forums should have resulted in people going to the image in question and downvoting it.
Unless there is something actually WRONG with the image itself that warranted its downvoting.

The fact that it's not very good probably has a lot to do with its rating. And honestly, there's nothing wrong with down voting an image because you don't like it. That's what the system was designed for.

Pretty sure that people downvoting it would have downvoted it no matter how they found it. Bringing it up in the forum just meant that they saw it when they wouldn't have seen it otherwise.
