Topic: So are we not allowed to upload traditional works?

Posted under Art Talk

Everytime I try to upload traditional art, it keeps getting taken down. I see other traditional works uploaded all the time though, so what's the deal?

Looks like from the deletion notes, you uploaded a photo of your art. E621 has rules on traditional art. You'll need to scan it, not photograph it.

Traditional artwork is more than welcome, but as site hosting digital files, we do require that the digitization process has been handled properly.

This means that it's digitized either with scanner or professional camera in good lighting, well done post processing of cropping, rotating, levels, color adjustement, etc. doesn't hurt either. Photos can also have additional problems which will never be present when scanning, including camera censor blur and contrast gradients, so buying that 30€ wifi enabled scanner which you can easily use with Nexus 5X is worthy investment.

Just whipping out phone from your pocket and eyeing it in bathroom lighting is nono. Also photos, especially taken with phone, can have other things that we really do not want here, including but not limited to artists real life location and EXIF rotations which do not work when embedded on webpage.

Let me repeat this so that everyone in the back can hear: If you take a picture at home in your bathroom, someone who wants to know where your bathroom is has a very good tool to find it, and you.

Please do not make it easy for someone to crawl in your bedroom window at 2am. <3

ah, that makes sense
I guess it is pretty sloppy if I just do the cheap instagram phone trick

thanks for the help!

If you don't have a scanner at home, (I don't)
try your local library/libraries.

Hopefully libraries in your area will have scanners.
If they don't,
a) they should have a paper suggestion form where you can ask they add at least one flatbed scanner to the library's computer area.
b) in the meantime, other places with scanners include some internet cafes and Staples (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staples_Inc. ). Staples has photocopiers where you can plug in a USB flashdrive aka thumbdrive (and Staples employee said those machines can put a scan file onto a thumbdrive) so presumably those machines will scan at a sufficient quality level.

If you don't have a flashdrive, I suggest a metal thumbdrive, mine is Kingston Technology (kingston.com) DTSE9 (DataTraveller) with a metal-casing (and no moving parts that I know of) so in my opinion is far more durable then plastic-casing thumbdrives that have broken on me in the past. Recommend transporting it around in something (mint tin, Sucrets lozenge tin, USB Flash Drive Shuttle, USB Flash Drive Case, etc) in a specific spot (example: specific small pocket of backpack) so you always know where it is. (ie. so you don't lose it)

edit (off-topic): checked Sucrets website and "1960s" "The Boy Scouts created survival kits that could fit inside of the tin." ... so neat/awesome!!!

I had this comment that had on the wrong thread, so I feel like this thread is a good place to ask and share my thoughts on posting traditional art if one doesn't have a scanner (mine is currently broken).

The advice I had if I take pictures on my phone (which is a Lenovo), especially at night, is to get good lighting (such as a lamp) and edit them further on Photoshop or any other program (my phone has Pixlr).

The current issue I have whenever I post pieces done in pencil, whether graphite or colored, is the glare. One piece that I made was done in colored pencil, and it got deleted when I tried to post it, most likely due to the grain, the lighting, and the glare. Some pieces done in watercolor or marker get a pass though, as they get less glare.

Are there any further tips on how to get less glare on pencil work?

Don't shine the light directly onto the picture. bounce it off of another surface light a white wall, or do something like this

That said, looking at the two pictures of yours that have been deleted for being photographs... I"m not positive why one was deleted-- but the other would benefit from some post-processing to make the white white and the black black... but it might be better to ask the person who deleted them, Alex. :/

If a given person doesn't own a scanner, they can always use a scanning service. Some place local like a Kinkos has high quality scanners you can use for really cheap, like $0.10 or $0.20 USD. You can even use a mail-order service like ScanCafe for $0.35 USD per scan.

For as cheap as scanning is these days, it's almost always worth it to scan something instead of just taking a picture of it.

Considering the average cost of a printer/scanner is far, FAR less than the price of putting ink in said devices, People throw out printer/scanner combos ALL THE TIME.

Not hard to scavenge one and just use it for the scanner.

That's what I have constantly been thinking. Even if you don't have money to buy that 40€ costing model, just go to local recycling center and scavange one where's the printing portion has broken. (Some digital art software cost way much more)

Another really common thing I hear is that many don't seem to have proper computer these days and have substituted it with phone and/or tablet, but then again, most of the new models does have wifi build in with them which will work on those devices.

And don't get me wrong, I'm certain there's some artists who are at the situation where it's actually near impossible or extremely inconvinient to get something scanned so using phones camera is the way to at least make people see it, but at that point you do also have to not take refusal in here too personally which many have taken and focus on posting on your personal galleries before you manage to improve your situation. You can also think it as better archival of your physical artwork in case that something happens to originals.

Do you think this would pass?
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/28110152/

It's a doodle I made last month done in pen and colored pencils, and was scanned from my mother's workplace.

I think it could! At least, in my personal opinion. It has some sketch lines but it's a cute piece with a cute toony style. Wouldn't hurt to try at least; worst thing that happens is it'll get deleted, so no big risk imho.

Recently, my mom bought me a tablet to draw on, and as I was searching for apps, I discovered something about scanner apps for phones and tablets. You know, those apps that would scan your paperwork through camera to be read later, and I thought, "Hey, this would work om drawings, too."

What apps would you recommend, most especially ones that would also save files in JPG/PNG format? I haven't tried Notebloc yet, but I have considered trying it, as it was on my "Recommended" list.

I would recommend none.

I tried couple, other ones name I can't remember and then Google Photo Scan and both resulted worse results for just taking photo with regular photo app. With black-white text document I could almost recoomend those and with photos it does actually detect edges and do required rotationwork correctly, but especially with google the resolution is severely lowered and there's ghosting and blurring everywhere as the app struggles to somehow combine taken pictures to one.

Also I'm kinda worried as especially google advertises the tool as archival utility to old images and some people may actually use it as one.

"Scanner" app takes a picture just like the Camera app. No.

Scanner apps are designed to take multiple photos in multiple angles and then do tons of post processing and combining with those.

So technically it's not "just" taking picture, but it's still using phones camera to do all of these so many other problems do still persist.

Camera =/= Scanner no matter the app.

Also you can get scanners now at thrift stores, good high end ones, for $20 or less. I mean I've seen scanners that were $600 about 8 years ago for $10 now. As tech depreciates it gets cheaper. Not really any excuse not to have one. HP's Envy series scanners are great ones.
