Topic: Minimum quality?

Posted under General

What is the minimum quality? It seems to change wildly from what i've seen on e621 and is completely random. 4 years ago according to this post https://e621.net/forum/show/87175 makes it seem pretty easy to not have your stuff deleted for "minimum quality" yet i've had 2 of my posts deleted at random for that reason

I might be able to understand the 2nd but not the 1st?
Theres almost no clear guidelines on what counts as minimum quality and it just seems like its straight up to the admins own personal feelings whether or not something should be taken down
On the other fourm post they did describe a few things but all I can think of for why these were taken down is low resolution and its not like thats describe in great detail, what is "too low" for the resolution and such? I work in 1000x1000 and crop down if needed so would that make it too low?
Please can someone help me understand this?

"All submissions need to display a solid grasp of artistic principles
All submissions need to be presented in a legible / readable format
the chosen medium (image, video, flash) needs to be of a high quality
traditional media needs to be either scanned in properly or photographed with impeccable lighting and contrast"

I don't see how anything this person has posted violates any of these "minimum quality rules". If you'd like to argue the "solid grasp of artistic principles" bit, well that's a bit of a vague rule, and nothing that they have made is entirely awful in that regard, certainly not worth deleting.

Old images are grandfathered in, and are immune to standard rule changes. For example, quality standards became more strict, but old images which would be deleted if posted today are allowed in.

stuff

Surely I'm not the only one who gets suspicious when a user with no avatar, no post history, no favorites, no edits, no participation of any sort whatsoever in the site suddenly leaps up to defend another user when there's been a disagreement?

No, they’re very much right in this case. If you are only going off of what was the first image, which I cannot seem to access anymore, the anatomy alone is a disqualifier. The character on the right literally has a 2 sided head, their muzzle is small and flat (and both of theirs is missing a part), and where’s the rest of her left shoulder?!

The left character is also bad, the right arm is larger than the other, one eye is higher than the other if the muzzle is the middle of the face, their nipples are in the middle of the chest and not where they’re supposed to be, and the objects both characters are laying should have caused them to fall over in that position.

No one said they were. In this case, mods are right since they can delete any post they think is worth being deleted. No one ever reads the Terms of Service.

Also, you can just ask the mod that deleted your post to explain it some more via PM

Some very fair criticism

I mean, that might be a bit much for porn? By all accounts to the layman it looks fine, certainly better than a good amount of pictures you can find on this website. I didn't even notice any of those things looking at it, I don't think the general masturbating public will. I respect your criticism, I just don't think it warrants outright deletion.

That's kinda bullshit? Like, having a picture just be deleted at any time because an admin decides to is kinda wank.

Porn is a form of art. If you’re not gonna give it your all and dedicate the time to make it accurate, why should people wank to it if someone else did dedicate their time and gave it their all.

This looks like the artist skipped to step three, didn’t use references for bodies, and I think they tried to draw both characters at once. I don’t know how long it took, but they would have been tired at some point and it shows.

Again, it's fair criticism, I just don't think it's quite awful enough to warrant deletion.

The way i'm seeing this is that if i'm not 100% perfect in everything I do I might as well not post it.
I imagine if thats the way it has to be the upload rate will plummet and artists who have trouble with anatomy will just up and leave when they find out that if they aren't also perfect then they get deleted

This site is an archive, not a general hosting site. The minimum quality standard deters such thoughts like “bad art is already hosted here, so why is my art bad?”, and the upload rate aids the people who uses this site as an archival and either uploads another’s art (with permission, preferably) or their good art. It’s a pat on the back. But, a negative upload rate can be manually fixed by either uploading good art before it is too late, or by asking the lead admin (or any admin, IMO it’s better to pester him because he’ll explain it better) to manually fix it.

Or you could work to improve, ask for advice, try different techniques, figure out and correct your flaws, and eventually get to the point where your art is in not even the slightest danger of being anywhere near the minimum quality standards?

I swear, this attitude of "how dare anyone suggest I need to improve" that many artists seem to have gets old. I try, when I can, to give advice to artists. Some of them genuinely want to improve, and then, of course, they do. Some of them want to be told they're already doing fine, and they don't improve.

While we do have the right, we won't delete content for no reason. We tend to keep it fair.

I'm happy to improve but how am I supposed to know how to improve when the art is deleted shortly after upload? Having it deleted doesn't tell me what needs improving it tells me that I just need to stop
I know that this website isn't the best for asking for critique but idk where else i'd ask for critique, I follow 6 furry art discords (including my own) and all I ever get when uploading art is praise or nothing, I could ask for critique but doing that on every piece of art would get tedious and probably annoy others at some point

1) Upload it somewhere else and ask for critique.
2) Ask the person who deleted it what you could do to improve.
3) Compare your art to that of other artists and see what could be improved.
4) Look at your art with a critical eye and see what could be improved.
5) Go to an art class and get instruction on art principles / structured course to help you improve.
6) Practice a lot and improve naturally.
7) Look up online art tutorials.
8) Try out different mediums, different styles.
9) Try to replicate existing art, and see where you fall short.
10) Try to replicate reality, and see where you fall short.

There, ten different options for you.

Honestly just uploading your art to some site and calling it at that is close to the worst possible option you could take.

Anyway, you say you want to improve, so, which, if any, of those ten options do you think you're going to try out? The more of them you choose to do, the quicker you'll see improvement, so I advise to try out several. Each of them has their own difficulties, even though some seem superficially easy.
