Topic: Multiple tag edits

Posted under General

I just made like 4 tag edits on a single post in <2 min before realizing I have no idea if that could cause some kind of problems. Could it, I mean like spamming some kind of history, issues with looking through them etc. I know basically nothing about servers, computing time or anything like that so I thought it might be good to know if I, in the future, should try to think first and them make a single edit with all tags i can figure out. Just don’t want to cause trouble :p

Don't worry about it, the system is designed to manage way more of a load than that.

Tag scripts, for instance, can let you tag four images in a matter of seconds. So obviously the same number of images tagged over two minutes isn't going to be a problem.

K, thanx:) I’ll keep editing :p
Btw, if you wonder, it’s just obvious things, like counting fingers on poorly tagged posts. But just to be sure, that doesn’t need a comment/forum thread, does it?

I'm a big clumsy buffoon and I do this shit all the time. I'll throw in my initial tags, realize I have an invalid, go to fix it, add a typo, go to fix that, realize I forgot something major and have to add that. There are rules against padding your number of tag edits, but if you're making mistakes once in a while and not like, adding 10+ tags to images one at a time every time you tag stuff, I doubt you'll get reprimanded.

Got it, I’ll avoid doing that on purpose :p

Yeah, this is the same reason I don't do more tagging. My tagging efforts end up positively riddled with spelling errors and staircase wit, so I tend to only tag when I think something is egregiously missing, or on occasion when there's a specific project tag I've been interested in. Because I feel bad about making 5 edits, when the first adds 5-10 tags and the rest are fixing typos or adding individual tags that only occurred to me after clicking "submit".

Actually, it would be kinda nice if the site had a feature to automatically merge multiple tag edits into a single "change", so long as it's the same user changing the same image multiple times in a row within a certain span of time from their "start"... say, 5 minutes.

IMO, y'all are fretting too much. I'm not an admin, but I feel pretty confident saying that as long as you're not*abusively* adding tags, one at a time, bit by bit, one by one, 30 edits of one tag each on one picture... you'll be okay.

Seriously.

I've been tagging undertagged tags lately. This basically means I'm browsing pictures, and adding one tag at a time. My last 200ish tag edits are all adding a singleish tag to separate posts. No one cares if you're only adding one or two tags to a picture. Better tagging is great for everyone. Tags are here to help people find pictures. Tags are good.

If you tag white_bckground, then delete it and tag white_background, no one cares. Honestly. Some days my whole e621 day is looking for misspelled tags, or redundant tags and fixing it.

You're gonna have to be really obviously abusive before anyone scolds you on it. you're more likely to be called out on tagging badly--by which I mean not tagging what you see, or deleting valid tags off of something. ANd even then? it's probably going to be a nutral note, not a negative.

Plus, it's REALLY easy to tell when someone's being abusive, versus being good-intentioned, but misguided.

So please, go for it. Tag away! It's okay.

(and there's nothing wrong with making a lot of edits in a few moments. Without any form of tool assistance, it's not likely you'll cause any troubles for the site unless the site is already having trouble. <3

Thanx, I’ll keep tagging then:) Btw what actually happends if you try to add a tag that doesn’t exist? From the way you talk about misspelled tags it sounds like they stay in the ”edit tag field” but don’t actually get added to the list of tags?

And what would happend if you added a tag twice?

Basically, you can tag anything you want (but please don't just make up tags randomly.) The system doesn't have a way to know that jotleon isn't a thing. So it adds it to the post, same as if you'd typed jolteon. :)

So, it adds it to the post. Of course, then yours is the only post tagged jotleon, and jotleon isn't a good tag, so... you should fix it. :) Of course, you can only fix it if you notice it :)

Whenever I tag a picture, after I submit it, I look over the list of tags on the side, to see if there are any tags with surprisingly low post counts. Sometimes it's an easy "oh! I wrote Jotleon, not jolteon, but other times it's more of a mystery. "why isn't this a tag??" (though sometimes, the tag just has a low post count. that doesn't make it a bad tag.)

Then, there are two 'easiest' ways to search for the 'right' tag.

1 - go to 'tags' at the top and search. Let's say you're looking for... oh... something to do with horse feet. Asterisks act like wild cards, so you can search for Horse* and get all the tags starting with 'horse'... or *feet and get everything that ends in feet... or *hooves or even something crazy like ho*se*fe* which would get you horse_feet, horse_feathers, and house_female. :) (all of those are totally made up.) ... this is really usefuol of you know it's probably got something to do with ONE of these words... but is it horse_feathers? feathered_horse? feathers_(horse)? searching for *horse* or *feather* would help there :)

(as a tip, the 'type' drop down is really useful if your'e looking for something specific. if you want horse feathers, switch to 'general' to avoid all of those artists named horse feathers. :))

2 - This one's a little more shot-in-the-dark, but if you go to the 'wiki' up at the top, you can try to search for a wikipage that might have a list of more tags that are related. For example, you might look up 'horse' and see if they mention your horse feather feet. This can be a bit hit and miss though... some pages only have a few mentioned tags, while others have more.

tag_group:index is really nice for some long lists of tags focused around broad ideas--like facial expressions, color-related tags, clothing, markings, and more.

uhh... I wandered off for a bit. Ahem. So. to answer your question: If you tag something that isnt' a tag, it's added anyway, because the system doesn't know what should or shouldn't be a tag. So it's added as if it were a real tag. So, if you make a mistake, don't worry, just fix it :)

So if I type falckdqlgklck3plvol59&92’clskfk in the add tag field it will be added as a normal tag?

ominous laugh...

Also, a lot of that was really helpfull. Thanks for helping me into the community :)

I’m not to good at spelling either, that’s one of the reasons I usually search for a tag (tag search) before adding it.

So does that mean there isn’t actually a list of ”valid tags”, the system simply has a database for all tags that exist in atleast one post?

Yep, that's pretty much it. The master tag list is full of trash, and nobody's got time to keep up with it.

Users are supposed to discuss new general tags on the forum first, but pretty much everyone disregards that. There's dozens of new ones every day, most of them either redundant or pointless. (Plus numerous new typos each day.)

If it were up to me, there'd be an approval process for new general tags. We pretty much already have everything that's needed, and each new tag just takes focus away from tagging the most basic things. I've seen plenty of posts where someone's added fifty tags for all kinds of minutia (clothing colors, etc) but forgot to tag the species and the gender.

Just found ”pawpaws” :p and made a forum thread to replace it with pawpads, unless any of you know what that is XP

I fixed a few of them but a post tagged with multiple-cocks, black-eye, two-tails and something else that definitley shouldn’t be a tag kind of made me give up...

I think I will take this time to gently remind you of the existence of the blacklist XD

I like to find a tag I like and try to find more pictures that need it, or to write wiki entries, or something. :) tagme is pretty fun too.

Who wouldn't be. Nearly 50% of the current ~255000 tags is tagged only once, and most of them are typos. And that's excluding everything that's already been fixed.

I mean, just look at this: https://e621.net/tag?name=t*quest&type=0&order=count&show_empty_tags=1

I'm kinda surprised that we have time to do anything besides fixing typos.

I notised that a lot of the one post tags actually don’t have any posts. Is this due to that post being deleted, or is there another reason?

My dude, you are totally fine, a maximum of 150 tag edits in an hour is the limit, so you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, the post timestamps, not the tag edit timestamps.
