Can they not just be IP banned? It seems like it would be less of a hassle.

Can't IPs be changed?

I can just make account using my mobile phone instead.
I can go to use free wifi somewhere.
I can cycle my router to get new IP.
I can use VPN to change my IP.
I can use TOR... you get the point.

Also IPv4 addresses have ran out, so banning one IP from Finland can possibly ban hundred people at the same time because of operator putting everyone behind one IP trough NAT (I have special contract to have public and individual IPv4 so that gaming consoles would work better). With IPv6 you have opposite thing where you have so many IPs that you can just cycle them trough without seeing the end of them.

Alright. It would eliminate the newbs who don't understand internet, though. Why would an operator give everyone the same IP? Thanks for the answer

He just said there are no more free IPv4 addresses left, which is the reason why ISPs started doing that.

We IP ban when there's a reason to do so, our procedures and tried and work best the way we currently handle things.
