Topic: What is it like to be an admin/moderator on this e621?

Posted under General

I swear this is a genuine question that I'm curious about. ╹‿╹)
That just started to become more and more fun to think about.

It has to be pretty interesting, ya know?
Admining for a site were seeing countless guys and/or
gals having a more than good time is 'Tuesday.'

How do they stay professional in an environment like this,
What would a professional for this site even look like? How do
they not get distracted by the subject matter, Working on in spite of
the stuff their seeing and even in some cases reviewing?

It's all just really fun and interesting to think about in my opinion since
for the most part, I don't question it. Like the stage crew behind
movies or I guess pornos in this case.

You know their there and it's thanks to them your watching
what your watching but, You have to wonder-

What's the job like? ╹‿╹)

Not really. There are just more dicks involved.

How do they stay professional in an environment like this,

I mean, it's not like we're all gathered in a room together and can tell when someone's pants come off. Further, this is voluntary -- so, it's okay if the pants come off. But most of us have day jobs, and other things. We do this here because we love the site.

It's not hard to 'remain professional' because we're not raging monsters who see titties and are unable to control ourselves, haha. We don't feel the need to comment in an unprofessional manner just because we see sexy things. we just... don't.

And we're normally selected to be part of the staff because we've already shown that we can sit down and have discussions on the forums about tags, posts, and keep our heads level. We weren't randomly selected hunger games style, haha. :P

So.... generally speaking. We've already self-selected to be interested in the organizational sides of the site: not just the porn for porn's sake. Which suggests it's befitting our personalities rather than any sort of ... odd practice of self restraint.

Plus, on the internet, no one knows if I'm wearing pants.

What would a professional for this site even look like? How do

It really isn't anything amazing. Lots of people work in these sorts of places and don't get distracted. It's a job. The porn industry is pretty similar. "Porn star" involves a lot of "Stay in this unnatural position for a few hours while sex-motions happen" ... and a lot of the "sexy" goes away pretty quickly. It's a job, like any other. there are just more boobs and dicks. It's really not any.... super hero power or anything like that.

All in all... for janitors, it mostly involves looking at recently uploaded pictures, and filtering out the crap, sending messages to users saying 'no, really, MS paint is not really a good painting program..' and "No, we're not biased against you, you're just uploading junk that is against our rules"... looking to see if things are properly sourced, not resized with a potato, not on the DNP list...

Admins, I believe, deal with more mail raging about "How dare you tell me that my comment was too creepy, THIS IS AMERICA I will comment WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT BECAUSE JESUS GAVE ME THE FIRST AMENDMENT" and "Okay, but I really want my art posted here, so... how do I arrange that?" and... "This art is offensive to me because I don't like it, and I think it's wrong, so please delete it." and similar. Basically customer service, but with more dicks.

also penises.

Most of us jsut log in and have a routine we follow when we come home from whatever occupies the rest of our days.

There are some pretty neat videos and stories out there about what it's actually like to work in the porn industry -- it's not exactly thrilling stuff and it can actually be pretty damn dark. But generally, the people who are walking around with boners 24/7 don't make it very far because it's inappropriate.

But there are totally documentaries out there and behind the scenes stuff -- go dig around, if you want!

Whoa, that's quite a bit Snowwolf and informative as all heck!
Let me first say that I appreciate it so much you went into such detail ◠‿◠)

Before saying I may not be able to address every single one of your
points due to the sheer number. Sorry in advance dood. ╹‿╹)

Not gonna lie, Was really hoping that 'odd practice of self-restraint'
was a thing. Would have been pretty neat to hear that Mod/admins knew
some sort of sudo-meditation technique that helps them stay focused on
the task at hand; no matter the subject.
would have asked if they could teach me if that was the case. =‿=)

Though different personalities and views on things makes more sense. ╹‿╹)

When you put it like that, I could definitely see someone
doing this as a 9 to 5 or 6 to 9 thing. And even though you
may not be All might you have to admit that working,
or even volunteering for this type of field requires a level
of advanced professionalism, ya know? ╹‿╹)

Heck, it's kinda scary how much I can relate to this.
Mostly because I was a part of the problem a while back ago =‿=;)
Committing the 2 actions you mentioned:
- Asking why some of my stuff was getting removed
- And Posting art that I didn't know was on the DNP
(Did not know Wolfblade was DNP before posting that entire comic,
Think I was the first to ever have about 20 or so "removes" in a row = =;)

Granted I didn't hold it against the admins/janitors/mods
for doing what they needed to do. Making sure to Apologize for
the DNP's and asking/going to the forums for tips on where I can improve to
make my doodles e621 ready. ╹‿╹)
I was still one of those peeps none the less. So dealing with a number
of peeps just like me has to be exhausting. Props for being able to do
it in mass like that. ◠‿╹)

I can see that ╹‿╹)
Someone who just can't control themselves in this line of work
would be like a bull in a china shop, dood. =‿=)
And oh trust me, There will be some digging!
This is still a really really REALLY interesting thing to look into
(At least for me anyway ╹‿╹) and I really wanna find out more and
see more things for other peeps point of view! ◠‿◠)

All and all, tomato tomahto.
I still think the things you guys do is still spectacular in one way or another.
Even though I'm more disillusioned to the 'magic' that goes on behind
the site, It's still pretty cool and neat to read about the things
you guys do. ╹‿╹)~★

Also I hope I didn't come off as too praisy haha ◠‿◠)
I truly didn't intend on putting any type of pressure on you guys or coming off as a peep who worships the very ground you walk on. Just really interested in the topic, wanted to be kind and honest with myself. Replying the way I honestly would face to face instead of a more abrasive version of myself built outta worry of doods thinking I'm 'soft' or whatever, ya know? ╹‿╹)

We're professional? :V

But seriously, you have to have a ton of patience and good judgement. Folks are gonna blame/bitch at you for anything not going in their favor, folks are gonna come to you for questions/answers, and folks are also gonna be looking at you as some sort of a "role model". It's a lot to manage but it's still manageable.

Really does sound like you need patience by the truckloads when doing that stuff
and Yup, peeps blaming while at the same time looking to you for Guidance. The Tell-tell
symptoms of being an Authority Figure lolz =‿=)

Wanting to tell you off and change things for them on one end and on the flipside
they...Well, sorry to say and even more sorry that
I've done it myself during this thread but they dehumanize you by making you into
this almost symbol like being, Ya know? Like you said, Seeing those peeps as role models;
a perfect one that has a neutral opinion on everything. A role model without flaws
or imperfections that would make them- Well- More human.

Oh... I'm just terrible, aren't I? ╹ _╹)
I meant well but the things I said while phrased
as compliments probably danced on some nerves.
(I really hope I'm wrong about this and I'm just
over thinking things again. The last thing I wanna
do is to bug someone that bad.)

If this is the case, I can't say how sorry I am.
I don't mean as strict of a professionalism as it sounds where you guys sound
like untouchable gods or whatever. I mean the term very loosely:
"You contribute a lot and were able to stay focused in an environment like this."

I just thought the combination of those factors, Peeps taking this site that seriously
was an interesting thing to think about. It still is, Just gotta remember that the people
your talking to are no different than you. No need to put them on a throne or
throw them in the trash, Just treat them like you would any other person.
(looks like I still have some self-improvment ahead of me ╹‿╹)

Nah, it's no problem. You seem like a sweetie (✿◕‿◕)

Not gonna lie, Was really hoping that 'odd practice of self-restraint'

some sort of sudo-meditation technique that helps them stay focused on

Well, there isn't really. At least, I haven't been invited to any meditation classes, though I TOTALLY think the staff should get together and have a party sometime. We can all stand around and look awkward together :D

But...

If you want self restraint. Let me tell you a secret.

It starts with you. You have to decide that, right NOW you're gonna make change. Not tomorrow, not next week, not after Christmas, NOW.

You know you best. Me: I know that if I try to make a HUGE change, I get overwhelmed. I know that if i make a little change, I tend to slide. So for me.... I set a goal, and take steps to attain it.For example: I'm going to eat healthier, but if the Hubby and I have a date, I'm not gonna stress out if my steak has too many calories (while also being aware of what I'm eating). I will eat one salad a day, at least. I can have a 2 pieces of chocolate, if I want, if I havn't had a "bad meal". I can maintain this longer than if I just decide to only eat 1000 calories a day... but that's how *I* work.

And I figured that out after failing, a lot. It's okay to fail. It's okay to struggle and say "this isn't working, I need to try something different."

But you gotta decide that you want to change, and you have to mean it and you have to DO it.

Change starts with you. Self restraint starts with you. You are the root of all change.

Don't be afraid to try new things. If, say, listening to Indian chanting, while thinking about a sunrise over the Himalayas and meditating helps you defy your urge to fap or smoke or drink or chew your nails, or eat another candy bar, then DO IT. If you think it might help, they try it. Like, seriously. youtube is full of stuff. search for some guided meditations and try that. i"ve heard AMAZING things about the benefits of meditation.

Though different personalities and views on things makes more sense. ╹‿╹)

you have the power to change yourself. :)

When you put it like that, I could definitely see someone
doing this as a 9 to 5 or 6 to 9 thing. And even though you
may not be All might you have to admit that working,
or even volunteering for this type of field requires a level

absolutly :) If it ever comes up, I'd totally put this place on my resume. (carefully :) )

Heck, it's kinda scary how much I can relate to this.
Mostly because I was a part of the problem a while back ago =‿=;)
Committing the 2 actions you mentioned:
- Asking why some of my stuff was getting removed

(Did not know Wolfblade was DNP before posting that entire comic,

Nah. There's nothign wrong with asking about your art-- the 'wrong' comes when people are .. well.. aggressive about it. beleive me, we don't mind "can you explain why" or even "but what about this other image?" ... the problem comes when people get angry and accusatory. We are accused of conspiring against strangers an alarmingly large amount. c_c

Mistakes happen and tha'ts okay. But hte proper responce is "can you please explain why" or "I'm sorry it won't happen again" not.. well, raging at us. :)

Think I was the first to ever have about 20 or so "removes" in a row = =;)

Oh I promise that's not true :) I knew of many people who have more deletions than they do aprovals :) And it's not a big deal, just.. be chill.

Granted I didn't hold it against the admins/janitors/mods
for doing what they needed to do. Making sure to Apologize for

Nah,. like I said, the bad ones get aggressive about it. Some people get really inordinately upset about being told 'no' in any way shape or form. Most people are fine with it, but then you have people who take it personally. Very very personally.

The most unique thing I can bring is this: "https://boobiebar.livejournal.com/?skip=180" Tales from the Boobie Bar" == This is a live journal, so start at the bottom of the page and go up, then when you're done, go to the bottom and hit "go later".. then start at the bottom again... (also anythign greenish in (parenthesis) is a shortcut to view more story) ... these are some stories from about a decade ago about a lady who was a dancer in a strip club. Mostly posted in a "customers suck" community, but does eventually explore ( as I recall)her reasons for doing stripping. Reading that blog was actually the thing that made me realize that I had been very wrong in a lot of my assumptions about people in that kind of work.

Also I hope I didn't come off as too praisy haha ◠‿◠)

Nah, it's nice to hear kind words once in a while. Like I said, there's a lot of hate floating around. But it makes things like this all the sweeter :)

Just really interested in the topic, wanted to be kind and honest with myself. Replying the way I honestly would face to face instead of a more abrasive version of myself built outta worry of doods thinking I'm 'soft' or whatever, ya know? ╹‿╹)

Don't let other people tell you what you have to be. Those dudes? they don't matter. Be you. Don't hide behind a fake you. The only way we can be ourselves is to BE ourselves.

It's okay to be soft <3

So you were just born with a divine (actually, looking at the old testament, let's pick another metaphor) patience? Seriously, being able to grespond to rage rants with constructive criticism a gift, maybe not to you but to everyone around you.

though I TOTALLY think the staff should get together and have a party sometime. We can all stand around and look awkward together :D

Someone, please draw this.

Being part of staff here is just like being a normal user, but with more responsibilities in the site's runnings. Being only a Janitor my role is somewhat limited, but users in the community can message staff when they need to talk about something, a site issue, or if they need to talk after a heated discussion and need someone to help them cool off and come back down to earth to get a level head again. It's actually something I don't think gets mentioned enough, some of the staff and other users are willing to talk and listen as long as you make the approach for conversation in a respectable manner and explain the situation you need to talk about.
