Topic: [e621 Code of Conduct] Official changes, questions and answers

Posted under General

This topic has been locked.

Hello everyone.

Last week, it was announced that today would be the day that we show what we've been working on. A lot of feedback, a lot of concern, and worry, but I wanted to assure you that these are fixing existing rules and making the others more clear. No more loopholes, no more double-standards.

No one is going to enforce these with an iron fist, everything is going to be regarded with intent. Everything is able to be appealed if there is a dispute and, as always, we are here for you.

Comments and feedback are welcome! Please keep criticism constructive, and absolutely no flaming or hating. If you don't like something, tell us why. If you do like something, tell us why.

Without further adieu...

Current Rules are here.

Newest changes are here.

Creating Duplicate Threads

I think that it would be good idea to make forum more organized and implement better search before taking actions for duplicate threads.

Links to websites that refer to extreme kinks and/or fetishes

So we're not allowed to link to http://e621.net? :P

Other than that and maybe few other points I don't see now that much changes.

____

I'm also concerned about how new rules would affect posts under 9/11, sacrilegious, politics and similar tags.

The only major changes I see from before is a more severe look at racism, sexism, trolling, etc. I mean, it did before, but now it is written in stone. E6 is putting on its professional face, so to speak

Some points I think need a little clarification:

advertising

Any non-beneficial, non-approved related businesses, organizations, or websites

I guess that this would include mentioning commission prices on posts etc, not just starting forum topics for advertising?

National hatred

Alluding to symbols of national hatred

+
racial/ethnic hatred

- Alluding to a symbol of racial/ethnic hatred

Not that I approve of that sort of thing, but would this ban art containing swastikas?

Spamming or Trolling

- Excessively communicating the same phrase, similar phrases, or pure gibberish

But I like gibberish :(
And what about pointless combos too?

Under user ranks:

Janitor: Can delete from posts

Is that a typo that should say "forum" not "from"?

Updated by anonymous

In regards to racial and national hate, the admins will be looking at intent. There are countries out there that find the US flag as offensive, just like some people view the swastika.

In the end, it's going to be how it's used. If it's just part of the art, that's fine. If it's used to define hate (a character with a swastika committing acts of violence against a character with the Star of David), then that's something else. It will be on a case-by-case basis.

Also, about typos... I tried to catch them all, but yeah. Thank you in advance for getting those. I'll fix them all when we go over feedback later this week.

Any reason why?

It seems weird that only the lead admin can appeal bans. If I'm a little too hard on someone with a ban (which has totally never happened before :P) then they should come to me since I made the decision. Why bother the lead with petty issues that can be handled on a lower level? That's the whole point of a chain of command.

If I were your lead admin, I'd want users appealing bans directly to me so I could know if the admin that banned them screwed up, and if anything needs to be done about that.

If the lead admin is telling you "I will handle all ban appeals, you don't have to worry about them"... fucking take that deal, man. :P

This. e6 now just needs a mission and vision statements (if they don't have one already)

Really? US flag offensive? The only thing I've have found a bit offensive is the mexican flag, but just when it is used like clothing. I mean, it is not meant to be used that way (as most flags) btw, I'm mexican, in case you have'nt noticed.

In the end, it's going to be how it's used. If it's just part of the art, that's fine. If it's used to define hate (a character with a swastika committing acts of violence against a character with the Star of David), then that's something else. It will be on a case-by-case basis.

Even if it falls in the rule of funny or rule of cool? I mean, it could be like cartoony, whacking somebody with their own symbol for comedic reasons

Most browsers have a spell checking option

Edit: This should be stickied, no?

Guess the point is that the admin who placed the ban could be biased towards an appeal. Generally I think most people prefer to go to someone higher up the chain of command to complain or appeal about things, doesn't make any difference to the decision really it just makes people feel like they're being treated better.

Already had a (derailed) discussion about this actually, and the suggestion to make the mission statement more visible has been posted in the feature suggestion thread.

It comes down to a bit of common sense, honestly. If somebody uploads an image or makes a post that clearly shows intent of hatred and angst and all that good stuff, then yeah.. Obviously we have an issue. If its artwork or funny stuff or even a parody, that would be quite alright.

Yeah, I missed the sentence where it said "These won't be enforced with a iron fist", so sorry for the whole "Ermagerd censoringz" on my part.

By the way, does this also affect the IRC chat?

Apparently not:

It's funny because I don't think there's anything about the current reporting system that says it's ONLY for reporting bad behavior. You can just as easily use the tools we already have for reporting GOOD behavior. I think people just assume that you're only supposed to report bad things. :P

It might have something to do with the fact that tickets are named like:
Comment Complaint
User Complaint
etc.

Illegal Drugs or Activities
This category includes:
- Forum threads or comments that references to abusing illegal drugs
- Forum threads or comments that references to performing illegal activities

Will this affect images that feature drug use?

Don't think so, it only mentions forum threads or comments, whereas other rules include posts.

This actually cam up in the racism part. Art is fine and is exempt except for stuff directly attacking someone else. That's what I get from this anyways

This. I have thought about nominating before, but the system comes off as something I would get smacked for if not reporting bad behaviour

Ah you're correct. I was just thinking about the "Report" link that you find for users and comments, which doesn't necessarily imply a complaint. However, they're listed in complaints in the system as well as when you're filling one out. Perhaps we should remove the "negative" aspect of these and just have them simply as "Report User" and "Report Comment" and such.

I have several questions about this.

Advertising
This category includes:
- Any non-beneficial, non-approved related businesses, organizations, or websites
- Can be linked with Spamming or Trolling if it is used multiple times in a short period of time

If you're an artist (I'm not, but I know people who are) does this include advertising your own commissions? And when I ask this, I mostly mean within the comments section of said artist's own posts. Is this no longer allowed?

Circumventing a Suspension / Ban
This category includes:
- Posting on another account
- Having someone post on your behalf
*If someone is found to have violated this rule, they will be banned with no appeal, regardless of previous disciplinary action

Ok lets say my brother or my dad got himself banned, and we all still live in the same house (yeah yeah I know, but I've at least got a job and he's still in college, it's just easier to stay at home). Does this mean that if an administrator decides to check my IP and sees that it matches my newly banned family member's, I'll automatically be banned and be unable to even appeal just because it looks like I might be my dad or my bro on a new account?

Discussing Disciplinary Actions
This category includes:
- Creating forum posts or threads to discuss disciplinary actions taken against a member, including chat logs and email correspondence between a member and an administrator/moderator
- Creating forum threads to discuss disciplinary actions taken against a content post, or other submission to the site
*Link to public records is located at https://e621.net/user_record
*If you have a question about a disciplinary action, please contact the admin or site owner via dmail

This scares me a little. Especially if something like the above were to happen. This is basically saying that if I e-mail admins about my situation and they felt like saying "screw you, too bad" then I'm not even allowed to argue in a place where others who know of similar situations could voice their problems too. If there is corruption among the admins (thank god that doesn't seem to be the case here, but if it were to ever happen) this would just help hide the fact. Still, I see how/why this one is necessary. I'm not arguing against it, and I trust the staff we have as of right now, I'm just voicing my concern.

Distribution of Real-Life Personal Information
This category includes:
- Releasing or assisting in releasing any real-life information about other members or employees of Bad Dragon, Dragonfruit, or e621
*If someone is found to have violated this rule, they will be banned with no appeal, regardless of previous disciplinary action

What all does this entail? And are we allowed to release information about ourselves? For example, if I mention something like the fact that my brother is 19 (lets say that in context this revelation was relevant to something) and then later mention his username, will that get me banned?

Extreme Sexuality / Violence
This category includes:
- Links to websites that refer to extreme kinks and/or fetishes

The other two bullet points mentioned "real-life". This one does not. Now I understand that we're not to post links to such other websites, but the fact that this one singles out fetishes in general has me worried... we're not eliminating fetish art here are we? And what about links to sources on art? If the source pages are from websites that include these things are we to not link to the source?

Harassing or Defamatory
This category includes:
- Insultingly refer to other people, employees of Bad Dragon, Dragonfruit, or e621, or any groups of people
- Result in ongoing harassment to other people, employees of Bad Dragon, Dragonfruit, or e621, or any groups of people
*This will be rendered against intent as well as action. The idea is to prevent a member from being uncomfortable in the forums or on the site.

Does this mean anti-brony art and the like are now banned? Or just that defending and further bashing are both prohibited? Also are those of us who've using insulting language in the past going to get in trouble for it? Or will disciplinary action only happen to those who commented after the rules are official? Also I'm curious, while it is bad manners to show displeasure for a post (it's better to just blacklist and move on!), would making a comment like "I don't like scat, it's so gross" on a scat post count as insulting?

Major Religions, Religious Figures, Political Parties, or Political Figures
This category includes:
- Any discussion regarding major religions or religious figures
- Any discussion regarding major political parties or political figures

I have a lot of questions regarding this one. Does this make "JESUS! I wasn't expecting THAT to happen!" comments illegal? What about "Oh my Lord"? Are comics and pictures that include religious aspects now banned? If they're not, then are we allowed to discuss the characters? For example let's say there's a comic about an angel blowing Jesus. Are we allowed to talk about the in-comic Jesus? What if someone posts something like a demon mutilating a religious figure? Is that allowed? If it is, are we allowed to POLITELY mention that we find it disrespectful or distasteful?

National Hatred
This category includes:
- Promoting national hatred
- Creating posts or threads with recognized national slurs
- Creating posts or threads with hateful content
- Alluding to symbols of national hatred

Does this include activism? Anonymous (the group)? What about comics that deal with these topics? What if the comics include them, but in the long run are about overcoming them?

Illegal Drugs or Activities
This category includes:
- Forum threads or comments that references to abusing illegal drugs
- Forum threads or comments that references to performing illegal activities

Again, does this extend to the art? Or only to real-life references? What if we were former drug users and we wish to talk about how we moved past it and how badly it hurt our lives and loved ones? Is something like that allowed?

Spamming or Trolling
This category includes:
- Numbering a thread, IBTL, TL;DR, or any other fad statements

We're not allowed to number threads? Not even to organize our thoughts/ideas? What about bulleted lists? These are helpful for addressing multiple parts of what someone else has said. As for tl;dr, as a reply to someone's long thought out comment I can see how that would be rude, however, are we allowed to use it ourselves after a long comment we ourselves have written in order to post a summery of what we've said for those who won't read the whole thing?

Now for all of these, I should point out, I am not necessarily asking just for myself. For example, I don't know if my brother or dad have accounts here, and if they did I doubt they'd get themselves banned. However, I would still like to know the answers to these on the off chance that they should happen and/or are relevant to any of my friends.

EDIT: Made it collapsible since it was taking up so much of the page.

Sorry for the incredibly long comment, and thanks :)

Thank you for the great feedback! I'll see about what I can do to answer them.

Advertisements: It's all measured by intent, but by and large, I don't expect anyone to kick a fuss over it. However, you can still contact us for ways we can advertise your commissions. We are working on both paid and free advertisement options for the artist. We want to help the artist, not hurt them.

Ban evasion: We don't typically check IP addresses with that unless there's another issue, but if it's clear you have a separate account from the banned person, then it shouldn't be a problem. If it ever did, a quick message to us will get it cleared up.

Discussing Disciplinary Actions: Openly/publicly talking about them is discouraged, but if your example happened, and you sensed corruption or a lack of professionalism among the admins, you should contact me and/or the senior management about that so we can take a look. Admin corruption was a thing of the past, and it can stay there. As you said, I don't think you have to worry about it with our admin team, but rest assured, you are not being shut out.

Real Life Info: Nope, won't even get warned. I used this example with the admins to help differentiate the two. I heard EDFDarkAngel1 lives in Phoenix (okay). I heard that EDFDarkAngel1 drives a red 1961 Ferrari GT California (not okay). Whether it's true or not, specific information to an individual (full legal name, SSN, address, phone number, etc) is not okay.

Extreme Sexuality: This is a blanket term for us for kinks that are more tasteless. Don't expect this to get used very often, but just because it is fetish does not make it extreme. Once this has been used, it will likely be clear to everyone as to why.

Harassing: Mountains out of mole hills :P Of course, I wouldn't retroactively punish people for comments they made before they were told it was against the rules, I'm not that bored or that evil. I mean, there are opinions "I don't like scat, it's gross" then there are insults like "don't be a dick" "you're stupid if you like MLP porn."

Major Religions/Politics: The key word is "discussion." A one-off comment about how god is great, or the other way around is fine. But actually going out and talking/discussing the merits of Jesus Christ versus the Flying Spaghetti Monster would invite the wrath of the Thread Banhammer.

National Hatred: It's all about intent. All your examples are perfectly fine. Anarchy groups like Anon are not considered objects of hate.

Illegal Drugs: That's actually a really good question. This was intended to prevent discussion about illegal drugs and activities, to prevent impressionable people from wanting to try them out. I'll chuck this under "we will rule on intent" and if you're trying to promote a drug-free environment, you'll be safe.

Spamming and Trolling: Numbering a thread is an obscure fad that's not really used anymore, it's not saying "I said this back on page 2". It's all about intent, so if you're being a jerk about a TL;DR, expect a record. Otherwise, you're fine.

Updated by anonymous

Hey guys, the rules regarding what can and cant be uploaded / said are only targetted at "serious" images and comments / forum threads. Any work of satire and parodies are exempt from them and still allowed. For example, if somebody were to upload a picture of Hitler boiling jewish people, that wouldn't necessary be allowed. However, if these were all turned into ponies, then it would be allowed as it is a parody of sorts. Essentially, everything that has been uploaded in the past and that has been allowed will continue to be allowed as long as its all within reason.

Updated by anonymous

So pretty much nothing that would have a decent effect on the site has changed, except that people will now be banned for political dramateering.

That's not quite how things work on BD.
I don't want to go into detail publicly, but I left their forums after being mistreated(in my opinion) by both a forum moderator, and staff member at BD in regards to what I still genuinely believe wasn't actually a violation of this rule.

Obviously I agree that people shouldn't get one just because they asked.

But haven't you said that you got your privileged status because you asked for it so that you wouldn't be dealing with the tag limits per hour of a normal user account? It doesn't negate what you said, but I just find it ironic. I mean, if you asked for yours, I don't see why other people can't ask to be considered just like you were. As long as the final decision is always based on merit I'm fine with people being allowed to ask for review.

This is why every list of rules should be limited to about 10 items. Once it gets any longer people start adding bullet points for fun and to try and "cover all our bases". Eventually you get absolutely pointless rules like "TL;DR = ban". When you're forced to really think about the freedoms you're removing and need to make compromises -- that's when a reasonable and effective ruleset appears.

Well, you shouldn't go around posting how great drugs are and you shouldn't encourage others to use them.

National Hatred: I hope it is still ok to say I don't like Americans and not talk about it I hope I don't get banned because of it. I mean I am just saying what I don't like lol

This is only for more serious things, "I don't like Americans" is a neutral statement and your opinion, "I hope those dirty American pigs burn to death!" is mindless Hatred with a dash of bigotry.
So, first one is okay, second is not.

Posting Unreleased Content / Hacking Data Files: what if the person did not know....

If you manage to get your hands on that type of Content you'll very well know what it is, trust me on that one.

I am not sure what "Can search up to six tags simultaneously" and "constructive behavior" mean...

"Can search up to six tags simultaneously":
This means you can only use up to six tags in your search, try searching for female rating:s group cat panda -mlp beach and it shouldn't work (because those are 7 tags) but female rating:s group cat panda -mlp should work because these are only six.

"constructive behavior":
Be helpful, don't troll, don't wilfully incite drama, don't harass others, all in all, display yourself in a way that wouldn't embarrass your mother in public.

I got lucky when Aurali went on a random upgrade spree. I may have asked for it, but I contributed to the site by fixing tags and participating in tagging projects when I was a Member. I'm just hoping the staff won't upgrade users that has done nothing for the site just because they requested one

They won't, they'll be discussed if they ask but we won't start handing them out to totally random people.
Also, we already did that beforehand but the real problem is, many good people tend to stay below the radar, this is kinda our way encouraging them to contact us about it if they have need for it.

Remember that censorship, coupled with heavy-handed admins is what killed fchan.

*Paid content over 2 years old is acceptable to post

Wait, does that mean ANY paid content? Or are there any special exclusions?

In regards to racial and national hate, the admins will be looking at intent. There are countries out there that find the US flag as offensive, just like some people view the swastika.

So will this effect images of the American flag or nazi furry images?

Also is saying 'MERICA now offensive? (i hope not)

Lastly, for the spam does this count people making 30 comments of "cute" on a shit ton of images or just making :) faces everywhere? Ive notice users spamming comments like that..

Well. I see nothing really wrong about. Not like I'm going to be troll forums just to discuss if jesus was real or not. As long as it doesn't jump into normal posts to the point that you can't even use the lords name in vein.

Illegal drugs & Illegal activities

Can we get a list what drugs, and activities are considered illegal? It varies from country to country. Should we banned women who claim that are driving car - it's forbidden in Saudi Arabia.

Tasteless kinks

I find straight sex in missionary position to be tasteless. I hope it would be banned.

But seriously though, for most people on earth furry is "extreme" fetish. I really think that this need more clarification. Does this is tasteless/extreme? What about sites that contains extreme kinks, but are not mainly about them? After all e621 has shitting_dicknipples.

Weed is legal in certain counties and states in the USA for medical use. Soo...perhaps this should be looked over a bit more :v

It's even legal for recreational use in 2 states now.
Medical is legal in 20 states, including Arizona where BD is located, and even more states have "decriminalized" it (minor misdemeanor to possess a personal use amount, about as bad as a speeding ticket).
