Topic: Gender tags

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

This post is in regards to the "solo_(gender)" tag, or lack thereof. I did a little bit of digging and found out that "solo_male" is aliased as "male" in spite of them having entirely different meanings. "solo_male" would safely imply the resulting images would have 1 male and no other character. An example of this would be a character display sheet, a masturbating male, or a portrait of a male character. My reasoning behind my proposal to enact a "solo_(gender)" tag is so that you can search an artist whose style you appreciate, but whose favored genre you don't. An example of such a search would be "(artist) -solo_(gender)". I have personally encountered such instances multiple times. Currently, the only means I am aware of to hide such images is to simply add to the search "-male", but that would also hide the miscellaneous hetero images that I would most likely enjoy; and to add "-solo_focus", but that would hide the various "solo_female" images I am certain to enjoy. It would also permit me, if "solo_(gender)" were to be made independent, to add "solo_male" to my blacklist and not need to add that stipulation to each of my searches. I imagine this is already a topic of discussion, but my forum search on related topics haven't produced what I was looking for.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Do you disagree? If you disagree, why? I can't imagine why anyone would disagree with improving the tagging system, especially since this would help remove many undesired results for various users' tastes.

Solo_Male is meaningless when solo male does the same thing.

Clearly you guys didnt read the post.

To imp: I dont want to hide all solo images. Personally, I JUST want to hide solo_male. Using any of those 3 combinations will hide images I dont want to hide. Though male_focus does seem to partially work, it still filters out images that I would like and not filtering images I dont like (though that one is at fault of the poster for not properly tagging).

To deme: this isn't about searching "solo" images exclusively. And it isn't meaningless because it would help refine searches to filter out any results you dont want.

Now before anyone tries to call me selfish, I can assure you I'm not the only one who would like this. Believe it or not, heterosexuals /are/ the majority even in the furry community (but by a much smaller difference than in the general population).

That's what solo male does. Add those two to a single line in your blacklist, and it'll hide posts that contain both solo and male.

What is the issue? Just blacklist solo male. It hides solo male images.

I concur with Watsit and Pakattu suojakaasuun.

Please, read the help page on blacklist at https://e621.net/help/show/blacklist

Mark the difference:

solo

- block all the images with the tag solo
male - block all the images with the tag male

solo male

- block all the images where each individual image has both solo and male tags. Images with solo, but no male will not be blocked. Images with male, but no solo will not be blocked.

As described in the help section "Combined Tags".

If solo_male were to become a thing, we'd have to have tags like solo_male_focus, solo_female, solo_female_focus, solo_ambiguous, solo_ambiguous_focus, group_ambiguous_duo_focus, group_male_and_female_focus... The tags would be unbearable, and abbreviations to make adding tags easier, like gmaff and sff, would be too confusing for newcomers to wrap their heads around easily.

The attractive thing about e621 is its simplicity in a few key areas, and the way tags become a thing and are then moderated is one which makes the tagging system as good as it is. New tags are always welcome, if they're relevant, but I don't think tags like the above described would be any good for the system. The system's not perfect and I don't think it can be, but sometimes temporarily removing a line from the blacklist can help you find the odd image you like and allowing you to add such an exception with -<post id>.
