Topic: Obtaining the highest-resolution images from Tumblr

So between imgur, tumblr, furaffinity, twitter, and patreon, which has the best and worst compression?

Highly dependable on situation: resolution, filesize, did artist use any tricks on any of the site to get past degratation?

With best case scenario:
Patreon attachment or PNG embed > Furaffinity double upload > Twitter transparency trick > tumblr/imgur
Usually:
Tumblr/Imgur/Patreon > Twitter > Furaffinity

Still, highly dependable on the situation. Always go with what's visually best quality.

https://abload.de this site allows to you to upload any full picture you have, i don't if it has any compression.

Anyone who has tried to access link to best version of anything, especially with multimedia content, knows that external links have extreme likelyhood of just going 404.

Not too long ago, safe.moe was nuked which many artists used to host their video files, so there's no way to get that content at all anymore. Dropbox links are extremely often not working and in past I have seen several megaupload links.

However that's more the reason for anyone using e621 to do their shit properly. When those links do go 404, hopefully we already have the material mirrored here.

We didn't got any solutions os answers to the tumblr "problem" right? Glad to know e621 is working good as a booru database just like "the big imageboard", in some cases.

Also what alternatives we have at the moment? What image compression can screw up "real bad" some images? i saw some examples with the raw and 1280 on tumblr but on witter, it looks slightly different depending of what art are we seeing there (some artists crop or resize their images so who i am to argue?).

I'm still imagining if we could see in the error messages, a possibility to know a alternate server or alternate link.... i don't know i'm being stupid at the moment.

is there another way for obtaining the higher resolution on Tumblr?

Updated by anonymous

We need to educate artists on the tumblr problem. They need to start uploading to dropbox or drive and add the url in the post. I had an artist try to tell me that the full res of their artwork was on furaffinity but actually it was of lower quality than the tumblr 1280. They could have just been trying to avoid talking to me tho. But they [artists in general not just that guy] need to understand how to properly post to furaffinity or if they only plan on using tumblr add another means of accessing the file through a file sharing site.

And then they give me a link through imgur, the image got converted to a 232 kbs jpeg. Gah!

As a perfectionist I would have picked up on any quality loss in my work right away, but it's amazing how many good artists can slave away at a picture for hours then slap it up on Imgur and have it be compressed to hell and not even know about it. It's honestly like finishing a painting then some guy just comes in with 20-grit and sands it down a bit and the artist being like "meh, whaddaya gunna do? That's how they do it at this art gallery!"

And with the advent of Patreon I'm not even sure how many artists even care about the compression of what they certainly consider to be merely previews...they probably figure that the high-res uncompressed version is always available on Patreon so fuck it, if people want their art in highest quality then they'd better start paying. Kinda sucks.

Well, this is two fold.

A lot of artists started arting when they were younger. A friend of mine--who worked with disney and is currently a freelancer--said this a few days ago on twitter "For the first 1-2 years I started drawing in photoshop as an 11 year old, I only knew to save jpg's so i thought that every time you start a painting, you have to finish it on the spot without exiting or you'll lose all your layers"

We 'learn' things and never question them until we question them. "Well, you just lose quality when you save a picture" is a mindset that happens. You're not born with the knowledge of file types... at some point you make the jump from drawing on paper to drawing on the computer and you just.... assume that the BEST PROGRAM FOR ART MAKING is set up to do things in the best way... but a lot of them are basically set up to be potatoes.

My niece is 11 and is an adorable little aspiring artist. She posts her art on Amino or whatever. I have no idea what they do to her files, and neither does she. She's just happy to draw other people's characters.

She'll eventually learn better--but that's because her mom is an artist too.

The other thing to keep in mind is that after a few hours of staring at a drawing, a lot of the time? we're done with it. Sick of it. Don't want to see it again. WE've spent AGES working on the twiddley details, we're tired of it. and if we do want to look at it again, we're probably opening the file on our computer, not the resized version we sent to a website, and not the copy uploaded to the website.

This isn't laziness or maliciousness, i'ts 100% lack of knowledge and accepting that "well, that's just how things are" because.. well, tha'ts jsut how things are.

And with the advent of Patreon I'm not even sure how many artists even care about the compression of what they certainly consider to be merely previews...they probably figure that the high-res uncompressed version is always available on Patreon so fuck it, if people want their art in highest quality then they'd better start paying. Now you're attributing to malice what can be explained by ignorance. :/

Plus, I think Patreon upscales, making htis even trickier.

That's why I said we should educate them on the issue and about the quality their artworks is saved as. They're not dumb just ignorant of it. Also I posted what I was talking about, this time the full quality no compression. It's https://e621.net/post/show/1629460

rather than wasting your time "educating" artists who probably earn less than minimum wage, just message them, give a flattering comment (because it's the most effective form of persuasion) that you enjoy their work but that they should consider uploading their art on other sites like pixiv and inkbunny too because of tumblr's recent quality downgrade. that's all you have to do.

You make it sound like we would be strict on them xP Recommending them to a better site like those would be best

Considering the type of furry art I enjoy (*cough* PORN *cough*) I highly doubt any of the artists I'm interacting with are ll years old...I pray they are not cause that would be kinda fucked up.

SnowWolf said:

I wouldn't even call that malice per se. I mean they technically don't owe us anything when it comes to preview images. It's just something that annoys me nonetheless, but if I was was an artist with a Patreon I might be the same way.

And who says I don't handle it like that? You're just making assumptions based off of...pretty much nothing as far as I can tell. I'm actually extremely nice when interacting with artists because they are the people who draw the shit I like. Honestly if you're a shit artist or you draw stuff I don't like (or a combination of the two) I wouldn't bother ever having such a conversation with you, because I wouldn't care if your images were low-quality. Save all your images as JPEGs with the quality slider at "1" for all I care.

I've had artist take up to a week to respond to me. Maybe the artists have a ton of inbox messages, or are skimming through messages and think you're asking for a higher resolution that what you could have gotten through raw and are like, "That's already the max, so they're out of luck."

can u ask instead that they post to pixiv as well? that's a more long term solution

Yeah, don't take it personally if someone doesn't respond right away; response is going to vary a lot depending on what the person's current IRL priorities are. I've probably got unread comments from six months ago sitting in seldom-used accounts.

Okay, I just found out something strange. This post right here:

https://hugoverse.tumblr.com/post/177144074659

If you change the _1280 part with a _500h, you can see what appears to be the full resolution. What's strange about it is that it doesn't seem to work anywhere else.

Edit: It also works if you just right-click it and choose to see the image.

It works on the other pictures but returns smaller resolution:

It's probably some kind of a modification for images with big width.

H refers to Height, so images which are shorter than 500 pixels tall will get the full version.

Unfortunate that other sizes don't seem to work so well. Would be a pretty easy fix to just put in "4000h" and have everything under 4000 tall magically go to max.

It kinda reminds me of soup.io when you could "modify" those size parameters to a extent but in the process you get .jpeg artifacts. Maybe that could be a "hint" if we can fiddle in the links to see if we can find a full resolution.

As of August 10, 2018, Tumblr raw links are broken on Tumblr's end for many posts. As of August 2018, currently best variation available is `_1280.png/_1280.jpg`]

We went YEARS without having one. then we found a work around and they changed it. They don't *want* us to have it, it seems, so I'd expect that they've made it quite challenging to find, if a way even exists.

the way we managed on seeing the full resolution was probably too simple and we probably need to find a way to access these full resolutions through another method most likely.

Kids.

When I put the cookie jar on top of the fridge, that does not mean that you should get creative in ways to climb up there and take it down, it means no cookies.

While we should keep looking for a solution, I expect that if we do find another workaround, it, too, will vanish in time.

Could be my ignorance, but is there any reason why they wouldn't want the full version accessible in the first place?

I mean, if the full size isn't meant to be seen while the scaled down is, why not delete the full size version to free up server space? Telegram for example doesn't keep full size images whenever someone uses the compress option for sending it to someone.

Updated by anonymous

Qwazzy said:

If we're being super charitable, it could be for security reasons. If, say, a malicious exploit were embedded into a .jpg, an easy way to get rid of it is to resize and make a new image. A smaller site like this one can afford to manually filter out images like that, but a larger one full of bots like tumblr would have more trouble if something like that ever happened.

Less charitably, they're being cheap dicks and don't want to spend a couple extra cents on the bandwidth for larger files.

Updated by anonymous

To be frank, we shouldn't have a raw view into their file store area. That was an architectural mistake on their part. They fixed it. I'm not sure why they refuse to proxy for the raw images, but I suspect it has to do with trying to save bandwidth costs. The difference between everyone downloading samples and full images on e6 is surprisingly effective at reducing overall bandwidth usage. It's why logged out users don't get full images unless they ask for them, and there is no option to turn that setting off.

Saving 1/3rd on bandwidth is pretty awesome when the the average user is not paying for it in any way.

I've seen some confusion about this in a couple of places about whether the original versions are still even on tumblrs servers at all, and whether they may be moving to a more twitter like system with compression on upload and so on, so I went and checked myself by exporting a backup of my friends account (who graciously did this for me) and seeing what the result was.
I can safely say that the original uploads are still on their servers, so as long as someone figures out how to get to them again, there'll be something to get to. (Also got images uploaded for messages that wern't uploaded to the blog proper as well interestingly enough.)
This also means that anyone with a tumblr account that wants to get their art as originally uploaded to tumblr back still can, just by rooting through the blog setting instead via each image.

Updated by anonymous

Reminder to kindly ask the tumblr-only artists you like to consider uploading their art to pixiv and/or inkbunny. Always start with a compliment. if they are nsfw artists, tell them that tumblr is ramping up their crackdown on nsfw artists and that you are worried their stuff might be deleted and that tumblr compresses to poorer 1280 pixel quality unlike pixiv and inkbunny, and that they would get some more exposure by not being limited to just tumblr. If these are artists who earn their living through commissions, patreon and ko-fi they really should be incentivized to get out there beyond tumblr.

artistname.tumblr.com/ask or if they disabled it see if there's some other contact like tumblr's messaging or email

There is a way to achieve this, but one would need to know how the whatever url is structured in terms of large and small resolution images. The image hosting site from long ago called Big Shots had a feature which could block downloading of larger resolution pictures. However, the way around this was to omit the last portion after the file name. Then you could pretty much download the image to your hearts content. I believe it worked on Photobucket and couple of other sites as well, but cannot remember.

If it weren't for all the pic collectors and webmasters that run con sites. One could probably ask for the larger resolution pictures from the artists with no problem.

The only thing companies care about is boycotts.
And since this isn't about taking a knee or something like that, nobody will boycott tumblr over it.

"We" should probably write some sort of Artist's guide to image hosting sites, clearly stating which ones are better and which are worse. That is something e6 people have much more knowledge about than your average artist.

Too bad any chances of having noticeable impact will be stemmed by e6's tricky reputation among artists.

I don't know if anyone noticed this, but tumblr has changed their image to either 1280 wide or 1920 high (last time the limit was only 1280 wide), so now comic strip won't go past the 1920p height. Yep, tumblr is officially dead.

that height limit has always been there. i know because i have been using tumblr almost for a decade and i have seen people trying to post too tall comics so many times. i have tried too until i learned that i need to cut the comic into pieces for it to not look shitty and squished.

apparently also downloads reblogs. I didn't know this because the person who tested this for me mentioned nothing of the sort, but apparantly you can get the full resolution contents of a different blog if you have it reblogged on your own tumblr blog as well. The process takes a few days, so anyone dedicated / determined to do this is going to need to wait a few days at most in order to get the .zip with the art in it, so my suggestion is to do it in extremely large batches for maximum efficiency.
Well, at least for the few days the nsfw stuff is still up anyway.

I was trawling through old blogs today, and found two NSFW (and non-furry) tumblrs which yield nothing via Tumblr's v1 API. I have never heard of this before. I'm guessing that blogs created after some recent date don't have v1 API entry points, and I tried to reach their earliest posts to check the date they were made, but it's impossible to reach the end of those damn botted blogs without the archive. This also means indexers like Tumbex can't view them.

If by hidden and/or unindexed, you mean you need to be logged into Tumblr and have to view it in a sidebar on your dashboard, then this problem remains, because I've seen plenty of hidden/unindexed/NSFW tumblrs and all of them until now were accessible via the v1 API. For example: https://nsfwnox.tumblr.com/api/read/json

If you mean those words in another sense, please elaborate.

hidden and unindexed are two different things. hidden means that only logged in users can view it, and unindexed means that the blog and original posts wont show up in search results, and bots cannot index the blog or it's contents.

All blogs deemed NSFW by Tumblr are automatically hidden, and all hidden blogs, whether hid by Tumblr or its user, are automatically excluded from the search results. And owners of non-hidden blogs can choose to be excluded as well. Source.

Still, I can find nothing about this missing API thing.

Anyone heard about this?

Blogs that have been set to only be viewable in the Tumblr dashboard (See the "Hide your blog from the web" section of this article) have always been inaccessible by the API, or at least as long as I've been aware of it.
The blogs that were hidden due to the NSFW ban are not affected by this; I assume it's technically a different status internally.

Oh, so being hidden by the author is not the exact same thing as being forcibly hidden by Tumblr? I guess that makes sense. It's just that I never bumped into this before.

Are you aware of any Tumblr which you know to have been hidden by its owner?

I couldn't find any, I'm sorry! It seems like most people use it as a temporary state, most either unhide their blog or delete it outright soon after.

However, you can quickly check for yourself my making a sideblog and activating the setting for it; The API will return an error with the message "This Tumblr is only viewable within the Tumblr dashboard", like the blogs you linked to above.

So I noticed that the wiki doesn't actually mention how to get the raw source, but this thread suggests reading the wiki for the most up to date information? Does that mean there is currently no method of obtaining it?

But it does?
