1) How do I add an avatar to my profile?
2) Why was my previous post asking this was deleted?

Two ways: easiest way is being on a post's page and hitting the "set as avatar" button.

Second way is in your settings menu. If you know the ID of the post you want as an avatar, you can manually enter it there as well
