example, trashcanmeme is suppose to be an artist tag.

You need to create it first if it doesn't exist with artist:name

And if you've not created it with the artist: prefix, you'll need to edit it in the tags section. Fixed it for you.

the site was changed sometime ago (late 2018 i think??) so creating new tags with "artist:tag", "species:tag" etc doesn't work anymore.

When you create a new tag:
tag a post with the new tag (for exmaple, trashcanmeme)
then go to the Tags tab at the top of the screen
type the tag into the "Name" box
It will say what type of tag it is
click the edit link, it will take you to a new page where you can change the tag type.
set it to "artist" and click save!

You can, but only if the tag hasn't been used before, or you're of sufficient privilege. Otherwise the tag remains the same type it already was. To change it after it was used, you need to edit the tag by searching for it here (just be sure it's not used for anything else).

No, the artist database here isn't linked to the post tag categories, so you still need to set the tag as an artist type when/after first using it.

Strange how a thread like this comes up every week or two lol.

It may be better in the long run but is not super obvious to new people
