Topic: Looking for opinions on a magazine idea

This might be a bit of a long read so bear with me. I had this idea a little while ago to create a furry magazine. I know that others have existed in the past however when I looked around I could not find much by way of currently publishing ones (if there are like a thousand out there and I just missed them, let me know). My idea is this, I want to create a furry art magazine where each month has a different theme, as magazines often do. The magazine has 2 goals in my mind - 1 to bring the furry community closer together and 2 to pay the furry artists for their work. I see many furry artists say that they do this while struggling to put food on the table, and as such since I like all of these furry artists and want to see them flourish, I think others want to do the same. The more subscribers the magazine has the more I would be able to pay the artists, and getting artwork submitted into a furry magazine should be a good way to get an artist's name out there and increase the traffic for their artwork.

The content of the magazine would be broken up into different subjects such as artworks which fit the theme of the month, an artist highlight where an artist is interviewed, some how to draw articles, comics, image sets, any upcoming community news... and other stuff of the like.

I am writing this, not with the intention to sell magazines as I am aware that advertising is against the website policy, I am primarily curious to see if my fellow furries would be interested in a publication such as this, or if as I said above perhaps many of these already exist and I just had the bad luck not to come across any of them.

Thanks for your opinions

Fanzines are a common thing apparently. Ask for participants to write columns or submit art and content. Thats generally how it goes. Theyre usually themed too.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't come across this term while looking into these self published magazines oddly enough. This will give me something to compare to, Thanks :D

only try if you're willing to put in the effort, halfway doing it will disappoint yourself.

agreed. I tend to be one of those people that isn't willing to settle for "good enough" so if I go forward with this it will definitely get everything I have. I want it to be the Time magazine for furries, gotta dream big, right?

Well. If you decide to go for it, sign me up. My personal recommendation is to keep it rating:s, rating:q at most. This will (in my relatively untrained opinion) broaden prospects in terms of customer and advertising base. And trust me, advertising is a huge source of income for paper magazines especially if you go that route. Think $20 even pays for 24 magazines' printing and shipping? Obviously less of an issue if you're thinking of staying digital, but that'd be a shame imo. Smart, but a shame.

There are many furries that are currently art deprived due to a lack of internet access, and others who additionally aren't allowed pornographic materials. Trust me, I'm sending at least 2 dozen 4x6 photos a month to such an individual lol.

What you need to do is look at similar "niche" magazines currently in print (I would think an LGBTQ rag would be a good reference), see how many issues they print a month, and crunch the numbers from there to check economic feasibility.

God I could go on for ages, being a wannabe small business owner who's dreamed of doing just such a thing! But for everyone's sake I'll leave it there for now. ๐ŸฆŠ
