Topic: Gimmick User Accounts on e621

Posted under General

I've seen and followed a handful of gimmick accounts on Twitter, such as Thafnine's "images that precede unfortunate events" and, several out of context accounts, and I might have lurked on accounts that impersonated pop culture characters.

What is this very booru's stance on gimmick accounts?

I don't see how it could be a thing since account is basically meaningless on this site. Which is probably the point. Depending on how far it goes it could probably get people in trouble for rp or something.

Sets are more relevant for that kind of thing than the account.

what would you even do with a gimmick account? post blips? do people even read those anymore? I mean I haven't looked at them since they got removed from the profile page.

There was that one Fara_Phoenix account whose thing was to get extremely salty in krystal comments until they were inevitably permabanned.
I don't want more of those.

there are the more non-RP-based Out of Context, Poorly Aged Things, etc.-type gimmick accounts that could exist that probably wouldn't be against any rules.

I could understand if a user were to focus on uploading or cataloguing a specific kind of thing, but I don't see the importance in tying that directly to an account.
For things that can't be tagged, that feels more like a role for sets. (Holy shit it's hard to find sets that are definitely going to be non-fetish + rating:s)

Like Rainbow Dash or Princess Celestia? Whose accounts evolved from MLP-related, somewhat role play-ish accounts to valuable members of the site staff? Then again, I think they managed to do so well by letting go of the original gimmickry and let us see them as the people they are (if filtered by the persona they present on the site).

On the other hand, there's likely been accounts like the aforementioned Fara Phoenix or worse that can't let go of the gimmickry of their account and actually ended up annoying other users and the staff with their schtick.

I'd say they aren't disallowed, but this site isn't really well geared for gimmick accounts. In the end, we're here for the exhibits, not other users acting In Character. Rainbow Dash and Princess Celestia realized this fairly early on and became more than their original gimmick. Fara Phoenix and the others did not. Guess who are admins and who are banned.

(Also, I apologize beforehand to Rainbow Dash and Princess Celestia if I mischaracterized their original intentions. I mean no disrespect to them.)

My guess is if you made some gimmick account like "Toe Detector" and posted something like "Toes Detected" on any picture with toes in them, you'd probably get banned for spam pretty quickly, unless you get a laugh out of the right people.
