Topic: [APPROVED] Tag alias: imposter_(among_us) -> impostor_(among_us)

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Huh, TIL there's two different spellings. I always knew it as imposter, and never noticed that it was spelled impostor. +1.

it's a bit weird that it and crewmate_(among_us) are currently character tags when I feel like the species category would be more appropriate.

I'd at least argue against it for crewmates. Any abstraction toward them being not just humans in suits is usually a fan-addition from what I've seen.
Maybe for the impostor, but it should require visible evidence that they're not just a crewmate.

is there any canon implication that they're human? I mean, they're awfully short for humans, as they're all 3'6"(106.68 cm) according to the scanner, they also have hands that aren't attached to their bodies.

There isn't exactly much of a narrative to pick through for details. If you really want to over-analyze, you have a wallet with a kid who's also in a suit, so either this is a post-apocalypse where everyone needs to wear hazmats at all times, or that's just what they look like.

Going to be honest, the height thing had completely slipped my mind, and I haven't paid close enough attention to the wallet before.

post #2419184 I'd like to think we can agree that this isn't species:crewmate_(among_us) though.
I'm not sure what's best to do with character-species confusions. I mentioned it being a bit nebulous in this post.
I'd argue against the species tag for crewmates, as it at least makes sense from an identification standpoint when an eevee hoodie is tagged as the species, but a yellow spacesuit is objectively just a spacesuit.

Edit: Would this just be bodysuit instead of spacesuit??

well characters wearing a costume of any fictional species is tagged as the species (example)

also there's the original design of a crewmate on the tablet so that'd get tagged, but whatever

Similarly, the mages from Final Fantasy (which are also in a similar quagmire of species-or-character) are tagged as species, including when other characters are wearing the outfit

There's usually a way to distinguish a species-based costume from a generic suit. I don't think the same argument can be used for both cases.

I was expecting this one, though to be honest when I made the initial post I hadn't yet noticed that. If it helps, consider the hypothetical of the tablet case being completely blank.

Well now this is even muddier, since black_mage isn't even a species outside of Final Fantasy IX.
That discussion does feel relevant here though.

Edit

There should probably be separate tags for hidden-species (+ any of the FFIX-canon ones) black_mage and a clearly-depicted character wearing the outfit.

My main point in the other thread I linked was explaining to a newer user that tagging guidelines get weird as heck when it comes to species-vs-character issues.

Updated

(Apologies for the triple-post, I don't like going back and adding to posts people might already be responding to.)
For a less-ambiguous example
post #2433750 Would we agree that this post is not species:crewmate_(among_us)? (but could be species:impostor_(among_us))

I honestly am not sure that should be tagged with crewmate_(among_us) at all. it dosn't really look anything like a crewmate and dosn't have any of the defining features of one. ignoring the relevance, without the context of the other character there'd be no way you could tell that it was supposed to be a crewmate.

Yet it has been tagged as such, and would likely require tag locking to not continue to be tagged as such.
Everyone's going to be coming at these issues with their own internalised interpretation of how the tagging works, and as far as I can tell there's rarely any actual admin-intervention on these things.

I wonder if people would be less likely to tag things that don't look like crewmates as crewmate_(among_us) if it was a species tag. also if we had character tags for each of the colors.

I'm inclined to doubt it, if black_mage is getting tagged for clearly-defined characters wearing the outfit.

also if we had character tags for each of the colors.

This sounds like hell.

well, black_mage _should_ be getting tagged on characters wearing the costume.

edit: also maybe we should have a split between the black mage species from IX and the black mage job from the rest of the series not sure how well we'd be able to differentiate the two though...

I mean
we have species tags for every canon color of yoshi, so I can't imagine that it'd be any worse than that.
