Topic: What is going on with the lag?

Posted under General

I need to know if its this site or if its something with my computer and if it is me then why.

The site has been so laggy and shitty lately for the past mouth. (After the Dox)Sometimes it will be fine no issues but then out of no where the images will stop loading and all I get is the tags instead of a thumb nail. Some times when I click on an image it takes like 5-10 minutes to load and only after clicking download other times it wont load at all or when I have multiple tabs open and click on one after a minute or two of loading it will just say "new tab" with a white page.Every other site works just fine Youtube, FA, imgur what ever its only on here I experience giant lag spikes.

Ok looking right now its fine ill browz the site for a bit

K not even a minute and its already shitting itself. I clicked about 2 pages then on the third no image will load. The page loads up almost instantly but all I see are the tags I can click on them but the page is blank with some tags at the top where the image is suppose to be. K going back to the first page and everything loads up click on an image boom noting but tags even tho the thumb nail loads up

Its been like this for weeks and keep in mind I can load a 1080p yt video with no issues and other image board sites work just fine.

Its not been particularly laggy for me lately, but because of the way the site works your location might be a factor in its speed. Probably not a virus, or malware, its far more likely its just site traffic.

For me it's been faster than ever after the DDOS attacks. Dunno why.

Soon after the DDOS stuff we fixed a deep-rooted performance issue which helped a TON, and then recently we added a new server to help balance load more.

Except for the occasional day where I get errors loading stuff, the site really had been performing really really well since the DDoS. The improvement is noticeable, many thanks!

Ok that's weird so then it is me (I don't know why like I said every other site loads just fine) or the 'fix' could have helped some people but screwed my internet up. Still confused as of why. I might try a different browser see if it helps

Also keep in mind I would go though multiple pages and open up to 40-60 tabs at a time then go though and look at all of them. Now it seems like U can open 3 before it poops out.

I sometimes open like 150 to 250 tabs at once and let them load on their own, without problems. Try a DNS flush and deleting cookies, otherwise check if maybe your virus scanner is having a hard time scanning the content. Or if you have anything else active that only runs on e621.

Personally I avoid that because some of them don't load the image, then I have to reload them. Just tested opening every post on a full page of results at once. -- 19 of 100 tabs didn't load the image.
Are you talking about opening them literally simultaneously, or just serially (look through and ctrl+click on some, one by one)?

We admins have a dedicated page where all posts are listed that need moderation (all unapproved and flagged posts) and I simply new tab a lot of them and then work.through the first while the last still load. It's rather seldom that pages won't finish loading, my bandwidth it's big enough for that, except if someone decides we need a dozen 20MB images.

Also, clicking the mousewheel opens a new tab as well, no need for ctrl clicks.

Useful for when one hand is otherwise occupied

Yeah, sounds like you are opening them serially
(as opposed to, say, Snap Links Plus addon, which allows you to rightclick+drag to open every link in a rectangular area in new tabs all at once . I installed it for the test and thought 'who the hell would actually use that' but it sounds like you might get some benefit from it.)

Also, clicking the mousewheel opens a new tab as well, no need for ctrl clicks.

Or rather, middleclicking (an important distinction if you don't actually have a mouse)

Yeaaaah... I'm going to go ahead and blame your issues with E6 on your software/hardware.

Based on how you describe it, it sounds more like the connection is getting lost somewhere between you and wherever the e6 servers are or it's just having trouble finding it. It may be worth seeing if changing your DNS over to Google Public DNS (or OpenDNS) and see if that helps at all. For some people it makes a huge difference, but I can't guarantee it will do anything since I don't know anything about your setup, but it's a simple harmless change and easily reversible.

Malware, or malicious software, are generally programs that are run in the background and can attach to any security vulnerability. They are so busy sending in your computer's stats and contents that they can make the computer slower overall, while consuming bandwidth.

I would recommend trying the free version of Ad-Aware and running both a scan and a registry search. The might help some of your problems.

So, when your connection to e621 is crap, you can try running a continuous tracert using Pingplotter (direct link) to determine if it's a network latency issue on your end or closer to e621's end. Download, install, and run the tool. Under Address to Trace, type e621.net, or static1.e621.net for the actual data server (should use the same IP though--they are for me), and then click Trace.

Check your average connection time to the destination server. Mine is 30ms right now, which is pretty damn good, IMO. Even 200ms might be useable. If e621 does show a high latency, check the connection time on each hop along the way to e621. Packets with high enough latency will be dropped or rejected. Likewise, check for any packet loss (PL% field) anywhere along the way, which can cause swaths of data to be lost in transit. Packet loss of 1% may be considered acceptable, but absolutely no packet loss or very very little should really be expected.

Usually that's enough to determine if the issue is close to the destination (issue with e621), close to the source (issue on your end), or somewhere in the middle (issue with backbone ISPs/routing). Often, an issue at one server along the routing path will be replicated in tests of subsequent servers, so high latency or intermittent packet loss at one server can similarly affect your connection to subsequent servers. For that reason, the first device showing substandard performance is probably where your connection problems begin. Sometimes, modems and some other local ISP devices will reject your pings to themselves (will show PL% of 100) but will pass your other pings along to the next hop. That is okay, but some ISP devices will block these pings all together, which results in only a partial picture of your path to e621.

In the case of an issue on your end, you're usually responsible for tracking that down and correcting it. Sometimes, though, the issue is with your connection to your first hop from your ISP (read: not your equipment), so you should report that to your ISP and they should, if they care about maintaining their end of your subscriber contract, rectify any issues that lower their quality of service below agreed upon standards. Still, I'm well aware that many ISPs do not uphold their end of the subscriber agreement.

In the case of an issue with your connecting to e621's servers, that's on them to fix and you to report (i.e., essentially, this thread).

In the case of a routing issue, you can try switching DNS servers as has been suggested. Namebench is normally the recommended utility for generating a list of alternative DNS servers, sorted by performance. However, I'm trying a similar utility just now out of curiosity, and I think I like it more. Both utilities are four years out of date... Google change DNS [your operating system] for instructions, so "change DNS windows 7", for example.

In the event Pingplotter reveals no issues, then your issue may have more to do with your browser or e621's backend. Make sure you confirm that you're still experiencing your issue when Pingplotter does come up clean to avoid false conclusions.

I forgot that it was possible to do this. Like what EDF said, go get yourself some virus and malware protection. Personally, I recommend Avast and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware respectively.

The site has been agonizingly slow for me all day. Thought it was my PC, so I cleared internet cookies, web history, freed up space on my C: drive, turned off my PC and restarted, reset my modem. None of these things worked. I know this happens once in a long time to the site where nothing loads properly. For instance, I go to click on a picture, and it takes about 5+ minutes to load. When it finally is just about to load the entire picture, it goes straight to a broken image symbol.

Personally, I would have suggested trying a different web browser before doing all that. Also, using a speed test website to check what download speed you are getting. It's possible that your monthly bandwidth quota has been exceeded and your speed is getting throttled as a result.
