Topic: Question: Youtube videos on e621 in general

Posted under General

I have a question and maybe something for the admins to think about it.

There are some recent video posts with bad quality, copied from YouTube,
and I was thinking wouldn't it be better in general to watch them on YouTube?
Not only is the quality often better on YouTube but uploading like 1080p or 4k videos on e621 would use a lot of space as well.
All the video views and probably monetization for the channel often owned by the artist and the benefits of the views to the YouTube algorithm will not count as well.

My suggestions would be to make something like a placeholder and put the link in the description or picture
or even better implement the YouTube player like other websites do on e621.

I know this works only for YouTube videos that allow to be external viewed.

In the future the content in general of videos will probably increase, so should we also upload all the relevant furry content from YouTube to e621 as well?

One example for this is the artist Vivzmind
very nice content and there are now a lot of YouTube videos on e621.
I would not mind for some short 1 min videos, but things like hazbin_hotel or helluva_boss videos are 10-30 min long and there will be more in the future.

And watching on some posts like this with 640x360 resolution post #2631917 post #2631778 post #2631764
As I said quality and the views for the artist as well to save some GB of space are some good points to consider.
What do you think I would like to have an open discussion about this what would be the best solution?

Thanks Prokura

It is not uncommon for webisodes to be uploaded in its entirety here on e6 (e.g., pool #20410), and seeing how many 'diverted' viewers here compare to that of the original sources, I don't think it's gonna have a significant effect in the overall sense of things.
In contrast to webcomics, e6 has limited it to only 5 pages (unless allowed by the artist) because they may be offsetting the cost of hosting their content through viewer traffic on their website.
I'm not sure how embeds are gonna work but if YouTube gets one, then people are gonna start requesting for embeds of other websites as well.

In the case of Vivziepop's videos, I can see how this is a special case with their video lengths being that long.
I'd say that the bad quality you see here in 640x360 resolution is because of the upload size limit of video submissions on e6.
WebM videos can only have a maximum size of 100MB, and the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel has a size of 397MB in 1920x1080 (downloaded via youtube-dl).

I would say that if the animation quality has degraded too much from that of the original, it shouldn't be accepted (being a low quality submission).
But if the quality is still decent after accounting for the 100MB limit, then it should be fine.

Yeah, I fucking hate this practise, but currently there's not really great way to differenciate videos simply uploaded to youtube for hosting and videos that were made for youtube to be monetized.
Because youtube is still technically just a video hosting website like every other site where content relevant to e621 comes from. We could start to handle them similar to webcomics, where we have more lenience now to also disallow webcomics hosted on clearly webcomic hosts and not just own domains.

These particular videos could be re-encoded to fit 100MB filesize limit we have here easily, but I feel icky to do so with these examples for said reasons.
