Because a medical thermometer is a thermometer, but many people use thermometer to mean the air temperature sensing thing, which is a weather instrument. It does seem that something is wrong there, though. There are food thermometers, medical thermometers, atmospheric thermometers, etc, not all of which are for the weather.

Thermometer could probably implicate scientific_instrument directly instead of going through weather_instrument, in that case.
