Topic: [REJECTED] BUR Squirrel Humanoid

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #2463 has been rejected.

remove alias humanoid_squirrel (0) -> squirrel_humanoid (0)
remove implication squirrel_humanoid (0) -> sciurid_humanoid (1867)
mass update squirrel_humanoid -> tree_squirrel_humanoid

Reason: The idea here is to redo squirrel_humanoid to better match tree_squirrel. The nonhumanoid tags are set up so tree_squirrel implies sciurid and squirrel aliases to sciurid. This set of BURs would see about implying tree_squirrel_humanoid to sciurid_humanoid (matching the anthro tags) and aliasing squirrel_humanoid to tree_squirrel_humanoid (as tree squirrel humanoids are what people mean when tagging squirrel_humanoid). An alternative is to update squirrel_humanoid to tree_squirrel_humanoid and then alias it to sciurid_humanoid to match the current squirrel to sciurid alias.

The proposed next BUR:

alias squirrel_humanoid -> tree_squirrel_humanoid
alias humanoid_squirrel -> tree_squirrel_humanoid
imply tree_squirrel_humanoid -> sciurid_humanoid

OR

alias squirrel_humanoid -> sciurid_humanoid
alias humanoid_squirrel -> sciurid_humanoid
imply tree_squirrel_humanoid -> sciurid_humanoid

(The second proposed BUR's update request is in the original BUR above. It won't matter if the first proposed BUR is chosen, but if the second proposed BUR is chosen, a third BUR won't be needed for aliasing away squirrel_humanoid.)

EDIT: The bulk update request #2463 (forum #334324) has been rejected by @Clawstripe.

can we just call them squirrels (or squirrel humanoids)

Because "squirrels" refers to more than just tree squirrels. There's also flying squirrels; New World ground squirrels such as marmots, prairie dogs, and chipmunks; and Old World ground squirrels such as the Cape ground squirrel. If each of these other squirrels need to be differentiated from other squirrels by adjectives such as "flying" or "ground", why should tree squirrels be the odd squirrels out? As used on this site, sciurid and squirrel are synonymous, just like bat and bear are synonymous with (and aliased to) chiropteran and ursid respectively. By aliasing away squirrel, we're requiring users to specify which squirrels they are referring to, including and especially tree squirrels. So it ought to be with squirrel humanoids.

And yes, that is a lot of inadequately tagged tree squirrels on this site to get through still whether these BURs go through or not.

We're really not, given the huge number of posts with bears and bats and squirrels that are tagged just as those. I'd wager that most people don't have a specific sub-species in mind when designing characters; they just say "ooh, bears are cool" then roll with that. How would you want them to specify when there's nothing to specify in the first place?

How does the unintuitive name help with that, anyway? What would be so different if the tag was called "squirrel" instead, and all those other species still imply the base tag?
