I would consider this necessary regardless. Also a similar change for kanji, currently used for hanzi as well.

They were already mentioned near the end of this earlier thread that initially proposed an alias of japanese_tally_marks to chinese_tally_marks. That thread's alias (not the proposed western_tally_marks tag) was rejected since those sorts of tally marks aren't exclusive to either China or Japan. Aliasing the country-specific tags to cjk_tally_marks which would then implicate tally_marks, which would also be implicated by western_tally_marks would be the better choice.

I agree with this. The term "CJK", to me, is kind of specific to people who do internationalization/localization of software, and possibly people who support software for those languages. I think J. Random Tagger is much more likely to come up with chinese_tally_marks, japanese_tally_marks, or korean_tally_marks on their own when they're sitting there looking at the upload screen.

Of the just-under 4,000 posts depicting non-cjk tally marks, only 12 were uploaded this week (and one of them depicts 正 tally marks despite not having the appropriate tag). I don't think it's completely untenable to go back and fix the posts. Good taggers will pick up on the change, and if bad taggers are slacking then it only takes one person to add the more specific tags.

I want to say just tag tally_marks by itself. There'll definitely be a few posts that satisfy the broader tally mark concept without specifically using one of the more common systems, like post #3935121.
