Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: yoshi_and_toad_kissing -> phantomarcade_kiss

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #73940 yoshi_and_toad_kissing -> phantomarcade_kiss has been rejected.

Reason: I created the phantomarcade_kiss tag about a year ago, but slyroon appears to have made the tag yoshi_and_toad_kissing about three months ago. These tags refer to the same meme.

I named my tag after the artist of the original image (post #3989601), because it could be any characters. Ironically, there isn't a single post up that has yoshi or toad doing the meme.

(also is there a tag for the meme the Gardevoir is doing? I couldn't find one when I uploaded post #5154078)

EDIT: The tag alias yoshi_and_toad_kissing -> phantomarcade_kiss (forum #424998) has been rejected by @spe.

While the tags need to be merged, I'm not sure which is best.

The meme is officially called 'Yoshi and Toad Kissing', according to KnowYourMeme.com.
It's the only name used on Danbooru.
Google Trends also suggests that it's currently the most-searched name for the meme.

Though here on e621, "phantomarcade kiss" is the most-used name for the meme.
Both tags are used on "the big imageboard", but 'phantomarcade kiss has more instances than the other.

Also, you're a little off when it comes to the three months; it was seven months ago, though it doesn't matter much.

I'll stay out of this one and let another admin decide what’s best in this case.

Personally, I prefer to follow KYM's naming conventions for memes wherever possible, as they’re essentially the Wikipedia of memes. They probably had a reason for going with one name over the other.

The latter name referencing specific characters isn’t really a problem. Other meme tags already do this, like mario_smoking_weed.

Also, on a personal note, when I first saw "phantomarcade kiss", I thought, "the what now?" But when I saw "yoshi and toad kissing", I recognized it right away. The latter name probably has wider recognition, since the former requires knowledge of the artist behind the original meme, while the latter will be familiar to anyone who’s merely seen the meme.

I’ll hold off on approving anything for a bit in case anyone has any objections, but I’m leaning towards flipping the current alias request.

On the one hand, phantomarcade_kiss doesn't use the characters' names, but yoshi_and_toad_kissing is more easily recognizable as to what the meme is referencing. I agree with Spe on flipping this. The pro for phantomarcade_kiss isn't actually relevant considering there are a number of meme tags referring to characters not visible in a picture using that meme, which makes sense. The meme name isn't referring to the characters in a picture showing the meme (except the original), but to the characters who inspired the meme, regardless of what a particular picture shows.
