First, what do the two tags mean, how are they different, if at all?

Joke is something you can identify, humor is merely something that the work possessed. If anything, humor could be aliased to joke maybe?

I mean, I see a difference between humorous works (works possessing humor) like post #234330, post #220955, maybe post #195957 versus works containing a joke, like post #182111, post #207039, maybe post #243780.

Tags are cheap. There's nothing wrong with more tags, the only problem is when they're actually confusing. If it's not as confusing as the difference between the difference between bound vs. bondage (the distinction of which is quite necessary), then why bother?

The tags could use to be better defined, certainly.

But humor implies that something is funny, and not all jokes are funny. 'Funny' and 'humor' are both very subjective things.

There are jokes that aren't humorous and there is humor that has nothing to do with a joke.

A sight gag for instance, humor without a joke.

Well since funny and comedy is already aliased to humor and the purpose of a joke is to entertain inside of comedic field. If a joke is funny or not is irrelevant, as long as you can see it was meant to be entertaining for some.

Maybe a implication would be better then?

Maybe joke and prank should implicate humor. Regardless of if they are funny or not because the theme is meant to be comedy or rather humor

I think these should be aliased together to promote consistent tagging and make the database easier to navigate.

Where does the line go between when something contain a joke and a humorous work

Well you could argue that the images as a whole on post #182111, post #207039 and post #243780, are comedy's. because none of these images have anything else but their humors entertainment value.

Hrm, doing either aliasing or implicating has its share of advantages/disadvantages, so whichever one we decide on should probably take those into account

  • For implicating joke -> humour and prank -> humor could work (since technically, they're a type of humour):

+ There's a clear distinction between each category, allowing selective searching and/or blacklisting

- We'll have to rely on the majority of users to be able to correctly identify and differentiate between all three, and understand when (& when not) to use them

  • Aliasing joke -> humour , prank -> humor

+ Much less tagging & maintenance to do; most comedic material is searchable with one tag

- Very limited ability to narrow down searches since everything's aliased
-

As a sidenote, it looks like humor is currently implicated to pun
