Topic: e621 code update, 5/7/2011

Posted under General

Hey everyone,

As you may have noticed, there's been some significant changes this time around - particularly to the site theme.

A few of the sections aren't quite right yet - for example, the main body box for the page content below the header doesn't actually cover the full height of the page - but we're working on making things better as we go =)

Thanks for your patience, everyone - and to Aurali for doing all these awesome code updates. <3

Here's a brief changelog:

3.0 CSS editing

Various help file edits to de-danbooruize the system

Changed unapprove to classic flag for deletion

Added files forgotten in last fix

Added change to html5

Added edits to thumbnailizer to not show deleted thumbs

(edited by tony311):
Artist tags are back to the classic yellow
Quote boxes look nicer
Background colors darkened a bit

Questions? Comments? Post 'em below!

For the first change, I think the color used for the boxes should be made darker (more like the old background color).

Varka

I liked it when it was all the same color. This feels like a eye sore to me.

Updated by anonymous

Yeah, darker color is a must. Light colors are too hippy dippy.

Updated by anonymous

is there any way we can have an option to go back to the 2.0 skin? I preferred that one.

Updated by anonymous

I do say thanks to Aurali and tony311 for all these cool updates. But I just can't get over how retarded this looks right now. The last version I saw of this revision was way better than this. Can we please use the old one until we get this one fixed? Or at least be allowed to use the old skin?

Updated by anonymous

Needs yellow colors somewhere.
:\
Somewhere...as main title or links...doesnt matter.Just add somewhere yellow color font.

Updated by anonymous

Tag implication search still goes to Downbooru page. For me, anyway, dunno if anyone else runs into that.

Updated by anonymous

Yea really need the old color back...i thought that i broke e621...and hurts like hell to my eyes waaay to bright...

Greetz =<

Updated by anonymous

Looks great. There are a few contrast issues with link colours, and content sometimes overlays empty .notice divs. No idea why my browser's ignoring the display:none, but it makes more sense to not output it in the 1st place.

Updated by anonymous

Other than the link contrast issues, I think it's pretty alright. Feels a bit fresh, though that's probably because of how long I've lurked e6. I have no clue how a newbie would react.

Updated by Donovan DMC

Okaaaay... So after using it for not much longer, I have noticed that the site seems to have slowed down very considerably for me, and that the "Respond" button rarely if ever works. ._.

Updated by Donovan DMC

no disrespect here. but i agree with the people saying its to bright i had to turn down my cpu's brightness half way and i am in a dark room =/ . again no disrespect

WTF
One of the files must of not uploaded right. I'm looking into this.
Also, to the naysayers... I presented the test version in the chat multiple times. This was the version that was accepted unanimously. Sorry.

+1 for a bit of yellow text in the design.

I can't help but laugh at all the people complaining.

Good work so far, a few small tweaks and the new site will have my seal of approval. I actually don't mind the new color scheme all that much, but I do kinda miss the old dark blue setup. Since it's all a CSS template anyhow why not add a theme switcher? Best of both (or more) worlds.

look at my 3.0 spec sheet. It's in the works.

Updated by anonymous

There is only one thing I am complaining about the light blue : It makes the artists and copyrights tags hard to read

Updated by anonymous

Looks really broken on a netbook screen (1024x600) in Google Chrome on the Upload screen, Popular and the top menu "tab bar" is on a second line breaking the whole look.

Updated by anonymous

Also in the mod actions page, the user link is going to "/mod_action/show/[id number]" instead of "/user/show/[id number]" and should be changed.

Updated by anonymous

A little list of things disturbing my eye:
1. Not enough contrast; a lot of text is barely readable, old colorscheme was almost perfect ^^ Oh, just noticed the comment you're gonna bring the background back
2. Those drop shadows look so much like the 90's... Make them less dense (#0c1c33 or lighter would work far better) - or make them go away.
3. This very form is slightly broken (Opera 11.10): text on the right partially overlaps it. Also fits here: layout has too much freedom jumping around if you resize the window
4. Smooth corners look a little disproportional; maybe reduce them to 2px for a sharper style?

...maybe I'll add more to it

okay sorry I called your work retarded. it was not the best word to describe my feelings, maybe I shouldn't have said anything about it. sorry.

No your fine, bringing things to my attention gets them fixed, as for the tag implications... that thing works right in my test environment.. wonder what's broken here.. ._.

oh okay then.
well unapprove still says unapprove, that's the only thing I could find that contradicts varka.
Maybe a more detailed changelog would be useful here.

unapprove is in the same file as the "post box doesn't go all the way down" once that gets readded, both will be fixed.

Make the green colors darker both when it's highlighted to show unread mail and after it's been read on the dmail page (http://e621.net/dmail/inbox)

Another thing that has been bugging me is the background color is too similar to the the color of the quoted text box.

I liked it better when the that field was highlighted to tell that something has been quoted rather than just a border around it. In this case I think a darker blue would look better, but I don't know how everyone else feels about this.

The text is definitely going to be shrunk down to 92% and the bright blue background is going to be darkened.

the text is at 87% and the color has been darkened singnificantly since your version tony.

It's odd, the alias search works absolutely a ok. But when I hit "search implications" instead, no matter what tag, it gives me Downbooru. Let me try it in...

Yeah, that's a no-go in Chrome or Firefox. I'm running on Linux 11.04, is anyone else in Linux? If so, can you try searching tag implications? Alias search also works in both browsers.

I'd like to get some opinions.

This first image is the site as it is currently:

http://tonyfox.ws/files/ebeta/e621_current.png

This next image is with the text shrunk down a bit and the background darkened:

http://tonyfox.ws/files/ebeta/e621_new.png

I'd like some opinions on what people prefer, the larger or smaller text, and the brighter or darker background?

EDIT: The background color has since been edited, but I'd still like some opinions on the text size.

Updated by anonymous

I prefer the smaller text with the dark background color. It makes all easier to read and the citation box looks better with distinct colors

Well I'll have to agree with the currently larger number of folks in saying that from what I've seen so far the light blue doesn't really seem to mesh that well, tad hard on the eyes. Plus the text was nicer the old way...purhaps simply a change in font would work?

Also, most folks that come here don't use the chat. Purhaps next time you could make a sampler page for how things would look and post that link to the updates header that tells us the latest news (the thing that appears at the top of most pages whenever there's problems or updates to let everyone know what's going on), that way you could get a larger sampling of opinion...even if you'll attract trolls doing things that way.

Other then that, great job as far as I can tell, nice to hear there will be template options in the 3.0 version, it's good to have options.

I reedited the colors, I'm just upset that people are shoving down my throat, same people who a week ago were like "best update evah"

It looks a lot better now.

Nice job m8.

Updated by anonymous

Ehh...

It's better, but I'm just too used to the old level of contrast. I kind of want to see what it would look like if you switched the color of the box-thingy with the background color.

Updated by anonymous

I'm noticing that the blue box in the uploads screen extends past the first line of favorited and recent tags. It looks like it was unintentional.

Font is too big.
Contrast issues, but you already knew that.
Some notifications overlap adjacent elements (This post is pending moderator approval overlaps the search box).

Web browser used: Firefox 4.0.1 - noscript set to disallow chartbeat.com

Sorry if this comes off as heavy handed, because I do appreciate the non visual updates, but why was the UI changed at all? It worked from a usability standpoint and looked pretty nice and professional to boot. Now it looks like an example of web 2.0 gone wrong.

Updated by anonymous

The changes make the site run a bit slower on my computer, but I do like the new theme. props to the code junkies on this update!

I find it hilarious that whenever anything changes the users spaz out and whine.

I'm not changing the colors of the current update any more, there has been too many people in this pot of soup and I finally got most of the people liking it. Sorry dude.

As for the UI, e621 looked horrible, it always had, and well, I figured a simple css update wouldn't harm too much, so we talked about colors fucking all day to get this one. If you want a site that looks like total shit, go to fur affinity, they'll fix you up.

Finally, there are a few issues, Varka forgot to upload some files, it WILL be fixed.

Updated by anonymous

Did you change the colors again?

I like it like this.

I like that the artist/char/etc. tags are bold! I think the site looks better than before, in general. Less...utilitarian and dull? Made me feel like I was shopping around in a dingy warehouse for things I'm not supposed to have. Now it looks more like just a website :p

Missing files uploaded!

Enjoy your shiny new layouts :D

Unapprove still says unapprove. I thought this would be fixed? And now the text to the right of the forum post box is going over the top of my writing.
