So, I was... studying... post #162142, and it got me thinking, what is and is not fellatio? I mean, fellatio is colloquially known as a blowjob, which is shoving your face onto someone's dick... but does licking it (like in the picture shown) count as fellatio?

I'd say yes. Anything involving oral stimulation of a penis is fellatio.

I'd say blowjobs only. Anything else should be something like oral_stimulation. Cunnilingus is more broad, since it is defined only by the use of the tongue on the clitoris or the vulva. Thus if it involves what looks like cunnilingus, it's almost assuredly cunnilingus.

Again, we don't need to strictly adhere to dictionary definitions on here. It's nice and simple to say mouth + penis = fellatio, mouth + vagina = cunnilingus, mouth + anus = rimming. And oral_stimulation as a catch-all term for all three.

Except we use oral_sex, not oral_stimulation.

In other words, fellatio is mouth on penis (and probably the scrotum, too).

Fellatio may derive from a Latin word meaning "to suck", but fellāre hasn't been used in centuries. Centuries is a lot of time for word meanings to drift.

Oral_sex, my bad River; couldn'tr remember the tag name and was tired. Either way, fellatio always has meant specifically that the cock goes in the mouth, not just licking.

Are we trying to find a tag to differentiate between licking and sucking dick? It would seem like both are already fully covered by fellatio, and if anyone wanted to look for pictures of cock licking, they should search fellatio+licking.

The word "fellare" means "to suck" so fellatio technically means sucking. The equivalent for "lick" is "lambere" and the licking action would be "lambitio". But nobody would know what that means. :S

Fellatio originated in Latin as "to suck", probably because that is the usual association people have with it. However, all modern definitions are broader, defining it as oral stimulation of the penis.

Words change meaning over time, some more than others. A few centuries ago, after Latin died as a living language, "silly" meant "blessed", a "gale" referred to a gentle breeze, "notorious" was given to someone well known but hardly infamous, and "nice" meant "stupid". While various e621 members' attention to etymologies can be appreciated, the fact still remains that the word fellatio has gone from just sucking on the penis to any oral stimulation of it, even if the usual method is sticking it in the mouth rather than licking it.
