The Earthbound series (also known as the Mother series) is a role-playing game series created by Shigesato Itoi for Nintendo.
The series is set a late 20th century United States, with game mechanics modeled on the Dragon Quest series, and is known for its sense of humor, originality, and parody of the genre. The player uses psychic powers to fight hostile, everyday objects. Enemies consist of everything from aliens, to possessed guitars, to evil hippies. Instead of swords and shields, weapons consist of household items, from yo-yos to frying pans. Signature elements of the series include the lighthearted plots, the battle sequences with psychedelic backgrounds, and the "rolling HP meter" that lets fast players heal in the time the odometer takes to roll down.
While the franchise is popular in Japan, in the United States, it is best associated with the cult following behind 'EarthBound' (the 1995 English localization of 'Mother 2') which is the only North American release from the series.
