Jedi are defined as Force-sensitive individuals or beings that are usually a part of the Jedi Order, an organization that devotes itself to the study and use of the metaphysical and ever-present energy known as the Force. They are typically known as defenders or protectors of the universe, able to utilize the Force to perform incredible, super-human feats that include but are not limited to; telepathy, telekinesis, energy absorption, mystical healing, clairvoyance and empowering the body to increase strength, reaction time, reflexes and mental acuity. These abilities are used in tandem with what is regarded as their signature weapon, the lightsaber.

In general, Jedi draw upon what is defined as the 'light side' of the Force, which draws on qualities like peace, compassion and selflessness, and generally practice to subdue or at least control their emotions responsibly. Many Jedi see it as their duty to combat all instances of the 'dark side' of the Force, which consists of Force practitioners emphasizing selfishness, tyranny, and negative emotions like hatred and anger, and allow their emotions to guide them. The faction known as the Sith are key among their enemies, leading to many wars between the two organizations.
