landmark
A landmark is a recognizable natural feature or artificial structure.
Landmarks are often local or national symbols, and may be well known around the world. In artwork, landmarks are depicted (usually in the background) to show where a scene is set, alternatively, they can be used symbolically to represent a city or country.
Larger landmarks (such as towers, skyscrapers and mountains) are commonly used for improvised navigation within the city that contains them, or the region they are located in, as they are often visible from long distances or useful in orienting oneself.
