The video game series known in English as Fossil Fighters first came out in Japan as Bokura wa Kasekihoridā on April 17, 2008. The North American release of the initial game took place on August 10, 2009. Created by Nintendo, the games feature human characters interacting with dinosaur-like creatures that were created from fossils (known as "Vivosaurs").

The notion of bringing extinct beings back to life using modern technology is reminiscent of the Jurassic Park film series. As well, the battling and collection aspect involving the creatures is reminiscent of the Pokémon franchise.
