Species: lagomorph
post #1169220 post #4279128 post #1566139 post #777884
The lagomorphs are the members of the taxonomic order Lagomorpha, of which there are two living families: the Leporidae (hares and rabbits) and the Ochotonidae (pikas). The name of the order is derived from the Ancient Greek lagṓs (λαγώς, "hare") + morphē (μορφή, "form"), essentially making the term mean "rabbit- or hare-shaped". Lagomorphs share a common ancestor with rodents, though unlike popular misconception they are not classified as rodents.
Lagomorphs are similar to other mammals in that they all have fur and lactate. Although lagomorphs are more closely related to rodents than any other mammals (sharing the clade Glires; from Latin glīrēs, "dormice"), the two orders still have some major differences. Lagomorphs differ from rodents in that the former have four incisors in the upper jaw instead of two. Also, lagomorphs are almost strictly herbivorous, unlike rodents, many of which are omnivorous. Similar to rodents, their incisor teeth grow continuously, thus necessitating constant chewing to prevent the teeth from growing too long.
