Winnie the Pooh (or "Pooh Bear" for short) is the main character of the Winnie the Pooh franchise. He was first written by English author A. A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepherd. In 1961, Walt Disney Productions and Stephen Slesinger, Inc. licensed the Winnie the Pooh character from the estate of A. A. Milne, redesigning him with his iconic red shirt.
Pooh is a yellow bear with a fairly large belly and a short red shirt. He's well known for his love for hunny, for sometimes getting stuck in small spaces because of his big belly, and for being "of very little brain". But he is very much beloved for the imaginative adventures he and his friends have in the Hundred Acre Wood (where they live).
Winnie the Pooh became banned in China when Internet Memes comparing to General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping as of 2017. Along with most other references, media, and memorabilia to both the character and franchise. In 2019, South Park referenced this occurring in the episode "Band in China" and featured Pooh Bear and Piglet as characters in the episode. The episode and the South Park franchise as a whole became banned in China as well.
The version of Winnie the Pooh with the yellow fur and red shirt are currently copyrighted to Disney. Depictions of Winnie the Pooh without the red shirt or other legally distinguishing physical characteristics are currently in the public domain to be freely used by anyone however they see fit for commercial purposes since January 1, 2022.
