Risk of Rain is a video game series developed by Hopoo Games (until 2023) and Gearbox Software (since 2022). The original Risk of Rain was released in 2013, and was considered a smash indie hit due to its challenging roguelite gameplay and high replayability. It was followed by a sequel, Risk of Rain 2, in 2019. Unlike the first game, which was a 2D side-scroller with pixellated graphics, Risk of Rain 2 pivoted to a third-person shooter in a fully 3D environment, but retained the core roguelite gameplay. It was also received well, with a 91% user review score on Steam and an estimated net revenue of $246 million as of February 2025.

Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2 were both developed by Hopoo Games until Gearbox Software acquired the Risk of Rain IP in 2022 and took over development for Risk of Rain 2. Before most of Hopoo Games' employees left the company to work at Valve, they developed a full remaster of the first game (with some new and bonus content) titled Risk of Rain Returns, which was released in 2023. Gearbox had planned to release a fourth game, titled Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds, which would have been an action RPG with roguelike elements made for mobile devices. However, Hostile Worlds ceased development and was scrapped entirely in mid-2024 after a limited early access period.
