Giygas (ギーグ Geeg), also known as Giegue in EarthBound Beginnings, is a major character from the MOTHER/EarthBound series and the main antagonist in the first and second game.

MOTHER 1/EarthBound Beginnings introduces Giygas as an alien raised by the protagonist's abducted great-grandparents, Maria and George. After the latter of the two had stolen information on the aliens' PSI powers and escaped, Giygas was tasked with leading the invasion of Earth and, over time, developed contempt for most of humanity. Following his first defeat and going into MOTHER 2/EarthBound, Giygas slips into insanity and destroys his own body, transforming into a primal "embodiment of evil" whose only goal is universal destruction. During this time he also becomes allies with Porky Minch who quickly begins to take advantage of him in order to gain power.

In his original form, he is a slender bodied, white skinned humanoid alien with a long tail, what appear to be vaguely cat-like ears, and all the other typical characteristics of his species. His eyes are almost always depicted as red. When he is seen at the end of EarthBound however, he takes the form of a swirling, red fog, taking on different shapes like screaming faces and warped, upside down images of his old self. At that point he is no longer self-aware, thus he can only speak in scattered, simple sentences.

Both EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound see the player characters, Ninten and Ness respectively, and their friends set out to stop Giygas with the power of eight melodies scattered around the world. In the first game specifically, the Eight Melodies hold more of a personal meaning to Giygas, as they are the song Maria used to sing to him when he was young.
