According to wikipedia castration applies only to males while neutering applies to both males and females.

It's also incorrect. Castration leads to being neuter, but being neutered with ovaries and testes intact is a thing. Wikipedia is kind of funny to cite, sometimes.

And not the first time this has been suggested. topic #5148 is one of the oldest examples I could find.

So should it be an implication from castration to neutering instead?

All castration is neutering/spaying. Not all spaying or neutering is castration, so yeah?

Technically, castration is neutering the male (removing the testicles) and spaying is neutering the female (removing or destroying the ovaries and uterus).

What should be done with neuter (invalid category), neutered (aliased to eunuch), and spayed? Should the distinction between the action and the result be kept separate?

Visually, the action and the result are tagged separately, right? From my understanding, it doesn't make much sense to treat them the same.
