[Feature] Blacklist suggestions

In category: Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.
Generate list of tags that are blacklisted the most and add in generally known tags to be blacklisted (cub, gore, mlp, etc.), then provide this list as checkbox kinda deal in user settings next to blacklist, in guests blacklist window, in guests landing page and new upload form next in fetishes section.

Why would it be useful?
This would make it clearer to users that they can easily block content they do not wish to see. As right now, blacklist is semi-hidden and empty, many, especially guests, are most likely unaware of this, which can lead into all sort of scenarios which could be avoided by this.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?

I think this is a good idea.

My only worry is that there will inevitably be a bunch of people arguing about what should and shouldn't be on the quick list, like some people complaining about MLP being on there (even though I agree, I specifically have that blacklisted because I don't want to see porn of that). There'd probably have to be an algorithm run just to determine the most popular ones, that way people couldn't complain about a selection bias.

I don't think it'd matter as much what's on the quick list. It's more about letting the user know that the blacklist exists.

With things like mlp, I think a lot of people would say, "I hate the cartoon, therefore I'll blacklist it", whereas they might actually like the 3d art. At least that's how it is for me. I think if I'd created my account and was presented with an option to blacklist it, then I'd have missed out on a lot stuff I actually ended up liking.

Personally, I'd say to leave the quick list to things that are more specific fetishes, and let the user manually add specific series, so something like:
scat
watersports
infantilism
incest
nightmare_fuel

And things like that. I was going to put diaper in there, then thought it'd be better to stick to the specific fetish, so infantilism.

infantilism I think is closer to a bdsm sort of kink like objectification or pet/pony play, and isn't implicated either way with diaper, which is a thing I want to avoid.

nightmare_fuel is more of a comedic tag, I wouldn't necessarily add that same with what, why, what_has_science_done, what_has_magic_done, and where_is_your_god_now

But definitely scat, urine, watersports, young, incest, rape/forced, BDSM, gore, death, My_little_pony, maybe pokémon though I've not heard of may people violently hateful of that as much as mlp, hyper, vore, inflation.
Some other potential ones that I can see people wanting to avoid might be anal, intersex, overweight, foot_fetish, blood, macro/micro

I think this is a good idea, but who would decide what should and shouldn't be on it?

Yeah, I think diaper would be ok.

nightmare_fuel does actually block out almost everything I don't want to see, and it was that post that made me add it to my blacklist. The other two posts I've seen could be added by blacklisting their ID.

I'd agree with all those except my_little_pony and pokémon. I'm not sure how I feel about overweight, it's not really a fetish and a few characters are often portrayed as being larger, such as bowser, and it's more of a subjective tag.

I still think the quick list should only contain fetishes that people might want to avoid, rather than series/copyright.

Like I said before, it's easy to dislike the cartoon but like the porn/art, and given the option to blacklist it without seeing any, a lot of people would, me included. So I'd say to have specific fetishes on there, as generally if you don't like them you're never going to like images that feature them, whereas series/copyright can be a bit vaguer.

I'd say that we would, the people who talk about it on the forum.

Obviously the admins can change it, but I imagine if people reach a consensus then they'll go with what list we end up with here.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned e621:blacklisting_suggestions yet.

Regardless, if this were to be implemented, MLP probably belongs on list. It's one of the most blacklisted tags, or at least used to be. Haven't seen updated counts in a while. I think I remember something about those being hard to rank nowadays because of the code changes?

It's not exactly linked in plain view. The only link I found is via blacklist help index, and it's still at the bottom. I wouldn't be surprised if many users don't know about it.

hey somewhat related:
https://e621.net/help/show/blacklist
https://e621.net/wiki/show/e621:blacklisting_suggestions

both of these pages list nezumi as something you probably should blacklist, and honestly i think its a bit in poor taste to list one single specific artist's name as suggested blacklist entry.

Speaking as the person who originally wrote the list.... at the time, Nezumi basically uniquely horrifying (sorry Nezumi). I asked for more artist suggestions, but no one ever offered me any. The point was to point out that you could blacklist an artist and provide some examples so that people could look at it, and NOPE on out of there rather than being awful in the comments.

that said, I've always felt bad about it, but... I don't know if it'd be better to remove Nezumi or to add some other artists.

As much as as I like their stuff, Whitekitten seems like someone who people frequently blacklist.

I feel like there's no polite way to recommend blacklisting a specific artist. I would personally suggest just having a line in there about how artists can also be blacklisted but not listing any specifically.

After all, consider this: unlike other tags, where the type of content is clear from the name of the tag (you know what you're blacklisting if you put male/female on your blacklist, for instance), with an artist tag you have to look at their art to make a decision about whether or not it's something you want actually to blacklist... So having it as a suggestion doesn't actually save anyone from seeing the content in the first place. In other words, unlike the rest of the suggestions on the list, the main advantage of including a tag on the blacklist suggestion list does not apply for artists to begin with.

So yeah. I think it's fine to just mention that it's a possibility without mentioning any names specifically. There is no lost utility there.

I generally catch almost all of those posts by just blacklisting the most common novelty tag what. There are very few that get through that, be it nightmare_fuel, body_horror, what has science/magic done, where is your god now, and why. And if I am in the mood to look at something out-of-the-ordinary I'll deactivate that blacklist.

The only reason I say MLP is because I've met plenty of people that will get so angry upon seeing MLP that they will complain to admins and moderators or report people for it, like the fiasco with /b forcing MLP into its own section. Since blacklisting MLP I can't remember a time when my blacklist hasn't shown up on the side of my screen, except when I explicitly remove it from a search.

Looking at those tags, none of them really bother me, at least the posts that aren't tagged with nightmare_fuel, as obviously I've blacklisted those.

I've never really thought of it as a joke tag, as searching it does show a lot that are pretty creepy, more so than the creepy/scary tags. I'd say nightmare_fuel just seems to strike a good balance on what I don't like to see.

The scary/creepy/horror kind of tags could just have a small section to themselves though. There's no real reason to not include them all.

Yeah, I can definitely see that, and I wouldn't complain if MLP was blacklisted as people do tend to feel a bit more strongly about it.

Along with other series though, it's still more of a grey area for me.
To split it into types there's 2D, 3D, feral and anthro, but as a new user, you might not realise there's 3D/anthro art of a 2D cartoon, so you blacklist MLP as you think, "I don't like mlp", and you end up missing a lot of art you'd actually like.

If it's not included in the list, then users would still be aware of the blacklist, it gives them a chance to decide which types of art they like, and if they later think, "god, there's way too much feral mlp here" then at least they've been made aware of the blacklist.

As a compromise, maybe have the option block mlp -3D, As there's 116 pages of 3D posts, vs 750+ for non-3D anthro/feral. Then users would know there's 3D artwork of it, and just be able to remove the -3D if they want to block it as well.

That brings up another point, if this gets implemented, then there ought to be a section or sidebar either on the page or in a hyperlink similar to the "formatting help and commenting help" showing what metas work with the blacklisting system, like an example that shows that you can combine two things and it will only blacklist both of them together, as well as showing that you can use a hyphen as a 'whitelist' modifier.

But for me, I don't want to see MLP at all unless I am actually looking for it, whether its in the style of the cartoon, SFM models, or intricately-shaded, so a whitelising of certain parts of MLP would be a sincerely person-to-person basis. I also figure if someone dislikes MLP enough to add it as one of the first blacklist suggestions right away, they proooooobably don't want to see it period, and like I said in the above, this feature ought to give them enough knowledge of the blacklist to be able to whitelist things on their own.

I think a sidebar might be better, there's already a wiki page describing all that, but it could be either linked or just put in a sidebar.

Well like I said earlier, if I'd been given the option to block mlp when I first joined the site, I would have, as I don't like the cartoon. I'm glad I didn't as I'd have missed a lot if things I'd end up liking.

It's not that new users wouldn't know how to whitelist, it's that they wouldn't know that, for example, 3D versions of mlp even exist to be able to be whitelisted if they've already blacklisted mlp because of the quick tag. You can't say "they can choose to whitelist specific types" if the suggested tag would stop them knowing about the specific types.

Going back to my other point, new users simply might not know what they like and dislike when it comes to series. Kinks are more objective, if you aren't into vore then you won't like most of the images featuring vore. But with mlp, and other series, you can hate the cartoon but like the porn, making it more awkward.

There's also that if, like you, they know they don't want to see *any* mlp, then they could add the tag themselves. I feel that it's bad to add a tag to the quick list that might accidentally block things that a user might like, and a new user can't necessarily say they hate all mlp, including 3D, if they've not had the chance to see any of the 3D stuff. And that goes for all the series tags, not just mlp.

I would expect that they rather whitelist "safe" art (which plently) than 3d. SFM ponies are horrible.

So , first ones to suggest are to block or whitelist either SFW or NSFW.

Ahem, I think suggestions might based on frequency of use And, imho the GUI should explain how make tag work in concert, I couldn't known that until someone told me and I'm a software developer.

There's obviously e926 for only safe, but people might not know about that.

I mean that's another way to do it, but as far as I'm aware there isn't anything that gives stats on most commonly blacklisted tags, and that might not include tags that people don't know about that should be on the list.

Like if we add rating:e as a blacklist suggestion, should we also add male and female, or male/male and female/female. I imagine all those tags don't have a high count on the blacklist, but should still be on the quick list, so if you're male and gay, you can set it so you only see guys.

To be honest I didn't even think of those style of tags till this post, so thanks for that, I think those would actually be pretty good to add to the list.

As for explaining how the blacklist works, there's already a wiki page:
https://e621.net/wiki/show/e621:blacklist

But then if there's a re-vamp and a sperate blacklist page created, similar to the new upload form, then it could be explained in a sidebar that scrolls down with the page, so the info's always there as you're adding tags.

The new upload form, for reference:
https://e621.net/post/upload?use_new=true

I think it'd be good if the blacklist got it's own page like that, maybe just with one box. And I'm not a web developer, but you might be able to make it so the text box, for blacklist tags, stays at the top of the page while you scroll down to click options for your blacklist, so it's always visible.
