Topic: furries in media (why all the hate?!)

Posted under Off Topic

Furries just can't seem to avoid the media the past week or so. I imagine most people heard about the whole Kellogg's Tony the Tiger thing. But earlier I was watching TV and this advert came on. Needless to say, this is getting ridiculous. We were never represented well in the first place by the media, but its getting even worse!

Can't talk much about it. Here in Germany, the fandom is mostly unknown by the public. CSI or Saints Row IV are the only media related things that comes into my mind. Nothing on the news or so (But of course are ads with anthros not uncommon here)

Consider yourself one of the lucky ones then. Here in the UK everyone seems to think we just fuck in animal suits.

furries, video games, guns, and death (shootings in particular) are the idiot media's favorite punching bags for raising drama among the sheeple of the world. this has been true for years and isn't likely to change anytime soon.

it's why i hate seeing the news on tv when i can get news online without near as much drama.

edit:

meh, just watched it and it doesn't seem too bad to me. as for things getting ridiculous, when have things in the media not been ridiculous regarding furries?

I'm actually studying media at college, so I should have really known that. Yeah, that's an accurate point.

Still doesn't stop us being hated, but whatever.

I'm not sure why that's such a bad thing.

I mean I get it's factually incorrect. Most furries aren't doing that. But I mean, even if they were, it's not like that's that big of a deal.

"Oh no! A group of people is engaging in sexual activities that are outside of the norms of our culture in the privacy of their own homes with consenting partners! The horror! The horror!"

I do understand wanting to correct misinformation, but really I feel like the response to that sort of attitude shouldn't be "Not all of us!", but rather "Yeah, some do. So?". Basically, what I'm trying to say is that making a stink about this sort of thing isn't really very helpful, compared to just letting it become normalized.

Then again! I'm sort of realizing that my skewed perspective is showing. I have a tendency to talk about a variety of topics regarding sexuality that are significantly more contentious than the furry fandom, so to me furries are not controversial. But I guess for others, they are.

People (especially in America) have a strict definition of what is "normal". Furries don't fall into that narrow range, but it's the same with a lot of predilections: Pony Play, Swingers, Gays, Lesbians, Transgender, and the like.

Wait, what happened with Tony Tiger?

A bunch of furries started tweeting lewd remarks and stuff at his twitter account, and he started blocking all the furry accounts he could find.

So furries being stupid and digging themselves a deeper hole.

To be fair, I think if someone was tweeting lewd remarks at a cereal mascot, they were looking for a reaction, and they pretty much got exactly what they were looking for.

I don't think the people who were making the comments are the same people who care at all about the public perception of furries. So, not really digging themselves into a hole.

It's also worth mentioning that Chester Cheetah joined in the fun, seeming to encourage the comments.

Furry and mainstream is not a good combination. At least for now...

"Themselves" as in the fandom as a whole.

Possibly they don't even consider themselves furries, and were just baiting media watchers to hate furries.

Honestly, I could understand blocking the ones who were violating the request to keep it family friendly, but Chester is allowing and encouraging even the questionable content?

I mean it's still a mascot account, so it's still pretty tame, but, here is his reaction. You can judge for yourself.

that reminds me of a video i saw on youtube recently made by MrRepzion titled I hate furries. iirc it was more about him finding the random hugging and squeaky noises some people make creepy and unwelcome mainly. oh and there was the mistakenly generalizing all furries as uh...would fursuiters be the word? well people who wear fursuits while doing such things.

Tony the Tiger started blocking all the furry accounts? More like PR firm hired by Kellogg.

These accounts are almost bots. They exist to connect to customers one to one on social media. The PR person responding is unlikely to know about furry or understand meaning of the avatars.

I never trusted MrRepzion, honestly. I always got a bad vibe from him, though I never really had anything to point at in particular. So I'm stuck between wanting to feel justified in my dislike of him regarding this stupidity, and my wariness of confirmation bias.

Because there's a stigma attached to it. Whether that stigma is deserved or not is irrelevant.

The local channel aired random CSI episodes last fall under the name "Best of CSI", and the infamous episode was included. I cringed through the whole episode, even though I am a HUGE fan of the CSI franchise.

One of the strangest moments I remembered was when Grissom and company searched for evidence on a cum-stained fursuit and a sitar suddenly started playing in the background. I was like "WTF? They couldn't come up with anything appropiate for BGM so they picked this?"

My point is that it seems to me that the best course of action is to point out that the stigma is stupid, rather than trying to separate yourself from the stigmatized action.

Much better background music for that scene.

Franzl Lang, the Yodelking. Not sure if you're being sarcastic (I know how most people feel about yodeling), but I genuinely really like this song.

I should post to the music thread again. I've found some interesting stuff recently.

Kiniel Cat and Panda Paco got involved... pretty certain they are furries since they both draw FURRY art. But nah, go ahead and play No True Scotsman Fallacy. "No way anyone in MY fandom could ever do something like THAT! It had to be 4channers just pretending to be furries."

Do you not understand the meaning of the word "Possibly"? It means I'm uncertain to the point that it could be either and I wouldn't be surprised. Some people are dumb and do dumb things

Sorry for the offense, I guess. I'm just annoyed that some commenters (on the Fox News clip on Youtube) and elsewhere are so naive and unwilling to believe that members of their fandom could be capable of such activities. I also don't doubt that ~~some~~ 4channers also double as furries, who the fuck knows. All I know is that Kiniel and Paco both draw furry art, therefore, they are furries... and it irks me when people go into that No True Scotsman crap regardless of what it is. No ~true~ furry would do this, no ~true~ J-Rock fan would do that. Ugh.

Whatever, its been a few days now, the media only care about viewing figures (as a media student at college, I should know that) so there isn't any more news on it.

*sigh* let's just hope we can stay out of newspapers for a while now, because as far as the media is concerned, no furry news is good news.

IKR? I thought the "ACTUALLY thinking you are an animal trapped in a hyooman body" stuff was more in the realm of Otherkin-ism and Therianthropy. I just like the porn and the occasional text-fuck session, this isn't my friggin' religion or something.

Also, I would be willing to wager that the number of furries ~without~ suits is greater than the number of furries ~with~ suits, because any of the actually decent looking ones are expensive as fuck.

I tend to keep the fact that I am a furry in an inner circle of friends. I mean you don't see homosexuals walking up to new people to meet and the first thing they say is "Hello, I'm gay and proud. Nice to meet you."

You realise that not EVERY furry is gay, pretty sure the majority are bisexual, although it's fairly evenly split.

I think he was just using the gay thing as an example.

But there are weird people out there who do tell you strange things the second you meet them. For example: The first time I met my friend's girlfriend the first words out of her mouth was "I'm racist" so I just replied "I don't think that's something you should be proud of."

So all in all, sometimes people will tell you they are gay/furry/racist off the bat because they think it's the "Cool" thing right now or something. That - or they might just be seeking attention or a negative comment so they can hear themselves talk more.

Yeah I get your point, don't be attention seeking or proud about it in public, its pretty odd outside of the group.

I don't really think this is an attack on a furry more like. "This person is driving their car in a weird bunny costume lol but it's raining outside I guess we'll have to chance it and hope he's not a phyco"

Realistically they couldn't have put some meth addict in the car cause then it's not "being picky" it's "holy shit are you seriously going to get into a car with a meth addict" Anything that is seriously dangerous cannot be considered picky so they put something weird instead. This isn't an attack on furrys.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that making a stink about this sort of thing isn't really very helpful, compared to just letting it become normalized.

It will never be "Normalized" and furthermore I don't think I want it to. I don't think it's appropriate to wear fursuits out in public (besides to conventions!) and it's just not appropriate to wear these things to the grocery store or out shopping with your kids whatever. It doesn't matter if your specific suit has never engaged in sexual activity or if 99% of them don't. They're huge - obnoxious - "strange" - and distracting and it's basically like walking down the soup isle with a shopping cart full of alarm bells and flashing lights covering the nearby shoppers with dry-powder fire extinguishers. It's just not something that is appropriate for public behavior.

Yes I understand that some people feel comfortable in these things (mentally that is not physically) and they enjoy wearing them but when it comes to the outside world (beyond your home or a convention/meet up) They're just not appropriate at all. Moving past the sexuality moving past the "weirdness" of the fandom they're huge and obnoxious and just not fit for daily wear and public behavior.

I've known a few furries who work or have worked as mascots. It's the only line of work where you get to wear a fursuit in public without social stigma. Some of them even had sex while wearing their mascot costume (or the mask, at least).

I suspect that a large number of mascots are furries, though I have no proof of it.

Haha I'll never look at the sports mascots the same again.

As for "only line of work where you get to wear a fursuit in public without stigma" You should not be wearing your fursuit to work. This is coming from someone inside this fandom, who does the art who enjoys others art "enjoys" ;) and who has been involved in other peoples fursuit fetishes and been around people who do not sexualize their fursuits.

Coming from someone who's been around all kinds of fursuit people. You should not be able to wear your fursuit to work. And honestly if I had a business and one of my employees came in one day in his/her fursuit and started trying to talk to customers and involving themselves in everyday work I would send them home and furthermore if they kept doing it - fire them.

Fursuits are not appropriate for public activity's beyond meet ups or "cons" because it's just not the way you should act in public. (refer to earlier comment for more on this)
