Topic: Other image boards as sources

Posted under General

I've noticed, over time, that a lot of sources are just pointing to another image board, like rule34.paheal.net, derpibooru, and so forth, and that often pointing to the image file server for that board.

Simply put, should that be allowed? I mean, most of the ones I've personally seen have the other image board (or its image server) as the only available source, but that's not where the original image came from.

I agree it's kind of lame and have noticed the same trend here and there. It's especially annoying when certain users seem to just dump random content that doesn't even seem furry related directly from a board like rule34.xxx or paheal over to e621 in large quantities, without even any care for quality.

That in of itself isn't so terrible though; What you *really* need to watch out for is when those users also copy-and-paste the entire raw tag block from whatever terribly-tagged imageboard they got the picture from, directly over into e621's tag field without editing it for correctness or the tagging format here.

It's awful because they get by the minimum tag requirement, and then e621's tag aliasing usually automatically cleans up enough of the invalid or close-ish tags to automatically be the e621 versions, and that makes it not always immediately obvious on first glance that the post is full of shitty broken tags or improperly used tags. Once those posts are sitting on e621 with their shit tags, it's like an infection for people who aren't aware of proper tagging on e621: they see a shitty rule34.xxx-style tag on a post, and then they start adding those to other posts here without knowing any better.

Fuck people who copy tag blocks into posts like that.

I hate it when they do that, but what I hate most is when a post doesn't have an artist name nor (legitimate) source and it can't be found via any reverse image search.

ಠ_ಠ ugh, i can't stand it when that happens and i happen to know a few common offenders regarding that. sites i mean.

There are artists who treat the boorus as their galleries, and so the source linking to them is actually right. In other cases, where the artist is unknown or their source cannot be located, linking to the other boorus helps users keep watch on the comments there in case somebody finds it out.

Of course, when there's an obvious source (ie the other booru immediately links it) it should be against the rules.

^^this one.
I actually did try following the booru links as I do want to know the sources when good stuff is on the display. Tried googling and reverse searching and with some cases they actually were the only source.

In some cases some older and more restricted boorus only accept gifs up to few megabytes with animations, so at that point I can understand that it would require lot more work to find original flash or video file of it and linking at least the booru as source already helps a lot.
