I have always wondered what it was for, since i never have seen a "broken" thumbnail.

They are very rare but they happen, I have seen maybe 5 in the last 3 years.

Very rare, indeed. I've almost never seen them. I made a bug about the last one that was pointed out to me, though. Bug tracker says it was fixed, too, so maybe the cause was discovered.

We still don't know what causes them so I just added a button so you can fix them as you see them (if you're contributor). Without the button, the only way to fix them is someone with server access manually taking the full-size image, opening it up in some sort of editor, resizing, and saving as the thumbnail.

Or running the resizing script by hand >.>
