Topic: WebM - Issues, Unintended side effects

Ok so Ive been noticing the [video] posts. Its great that e621 is using new formats an all but... well. Users may start (its already started) ffding the old Gif and SWF posts that the video posts come from. Now it might not be a problem for some people but ive been noticing issues, for one not everyone may use this format thus not able to view them so the original format should stay Imo along with the new post, just parent/child it.
Secondly ive tried the video posts on both my kindle fire, and uptodate windows 8 gaming laptop. Kindle the player doesn't function, and windows 8 displays a "invalid source/source not found" error.

Sadly the uploader already flagged the child (original swf) post.

I think the users should get a bit of clarification on if we should ffd the old original formats or leave them for users who cant get webM to work.

Personally I think approving FFDing of Gif and SWF would be severely premature, considering how new the WebM support is. Instead the posts can be parented to the non-WebM version.

After a year running with WebM support and getting feedback about how it works, it would make sense to consider if FFDing older formats is appropriate. Right now IMO it's clear those people need to just stop, and the rules should be updated to indicate something like "WebM support is experimental and at this time, flagging different-format versions of an animation in preference to WebM is incorrect. Instead, mark the other versions as child posts of the WebM".

I think that sounds like a good plan. WebM is shiny, but it's still a lot less common than gif or even swf. So WebM may not be as widely supported or as accessible to everyone yet, even though for quality reasons it is preferable gif or swf versions. There's a trade-off here and I think rushing into deleting the old versions based on file format alone could cause problems down the road if not everyone can view the new format yet. I think at least slowing down until we know the limits of the new format vs the old formats might be a good idea and I like savageorange's suggestion of how to handle it in the transitional stage.

we have been allowing both gif and swf versions of the same animation forever.
Why the fuck would we get rid of either for a new format now?
Keep them all, there's no reason not to.

This goes doubly for interactive animations.

I flagged the SWF files I uploaded before when I uploaded the WebM videos, because the SWF were converted from WebM and I didn't have any reason to think why the SWF files would be needed anymore.

I looked into it and it seems like every browser supports WebM except for IExplorer (Obviously). The only "platform" I noticed and isn't officially supported is the Ipad (Which I'm fairly sure some browser app supporting WebM videos can be found)

We already discussed that internally, we will keep both versions, regardless of what people flag.

Except if we have a webm from a gif from a flash, then that webm completely misses it's purpose.

So, does this mean that it's okay to upload a GIF or SWF version of content that only has a WebM post to benefit uninformed users of mobile devices?

If something was uploaded in native HTML5/webm, then it can automatically convert to GIF. If that doesn't work for some reason, and there is no loss in quality, then that should be okay. So long as its consistent with existing policies.

Take your Ipad, sell it to some idiot on ebay, use the money to buy a Samsung Tablet, profit from a device that is actually capable of understanding all formats you throw at it.

1. you are posting to a 2 years old thread

2. what browser you use? because that tends to matter more than your hardware in this stuff

Edge is terrible, Slow and missing a good chunk of features most other browsers offer out of the box, such as Webm support among other things. The moment I installed Win10 the first time, I removed edge and put firefox on. Even had to modify Cortana's scripting to make her work with firefox/google instead of edge/bing.

Why can't people use Chrome, Opera, or Firefox instead of Microsoft Edge?

I actually remember that Edge even advertised to now have VP9 WebM support, however the catch is that it has to also be using Media Source Extensions. What that means in practise is that services like YouTube now use VP9 codec with Edge by default, but sites which simply embed the VP9 video (like e621 and FurryNetwork) does not work at all.

But yes, this should be basic troubleshooting step you should take when WebM content doesn't work:
- If you are using Edge, IE or Safari, don't.
- If you are using iDevice, don't.

I think this thread needs locking now.
