Topic: Deviantart's changed link format

Posted under General

A while ago, Deviantart changed the format of their links.

post #1445677 still uses the old link format in the Source field:
old link format --> new link format
https://glooh.deviantart.com/ --> https://www.deviantart.com/glooh
https://glooh.deviantart.com/art/Catgun-345258360 --> https://www.deviantart.com/glooh/art/Catgun-345258360

post #1609590 has a mix of both, because the e621-auto-source-thingy hasn't been updated:
https://www.deviantart.com/batri/art/table-474134283
https://batri.deviantart.com/
https://img00.deviantart.net/d3ad/i/2014/220/7/a/table_by_batri-d7uaccr.jpg

And if you search for https://www.deviantart.com/glooh in https://e621.net/artist/index
it won't find the artist because the URL stored in the artist wiki is https://glooh.deviantart.com/

Do we have to manually change all Deviantart URLs in artist wikis?

I think the auto-sourcer needs to be updated, but we don't, I think, need to change all existing urls:

This post states that while the profile URLS are changing, the old ones will still continue to work. :)

dA will already redirect to the new links if an old link is used.

The problem is this effectively produces duplicate links right now.

And that searching for an artist by new URL doesn't work if the old URL is stored in their wiki.

I don't know if other people do this, but when I have to tag an artist, I like to search for the artist by URL.
If that doesn't work, I search for their name(s) in https://e621.net/tag/index and if I find an artist tag with that name, I create an artist wiki with their URLs.
If there is no artist tag, I create one + an artist wiki.

What I don't do is just tag the artist name in the hope that someone has created a tag for it already.

I love it when people don't bother to read what I wrote, and then give condescending replies to a question I didn't ask.

I love it when people assume I'm being condescending.

Your post did not address the status of the old name.deviantart urls. Someone reading could ASSUME incorrectly that all of these urls were being invalidated. In that circumstance then, gosh, yes, every single URL 100% would need to be updated because otherwise there would be broken links everywhere.

Being as how that is not the case, I gave this information to everyone else who might not be familiar with the situation so that other people can make informed decisions.

Past that, I stated my opinion on the matter. I don't believe the artist wikis really get a whole lot of use, and I'm not aware of any way that it could be automated via the admin tools that I am aware of existing. My information may be faulty, but I can't imagine we'd have a tool for that specific circumstance, considering that I don't think any of the major art sites have changed their URL structure, to the best of my knowledge. Thus, editing ALL of the artist wikis would either require a lot of manual labor, or for a tool to be written. There are over 10000 artist wiki entries with deviantart.com in them. That is not a small number.

So, that is my *opinion*... I just didn't think I needed to explain the entirety of my thought process to offer my two cents. 9_9

If it can be done quickly and easily, then it would be fantastic if that could happen, but to my reckoning it'll take a substantial amount of time, effort and server power.

you can do a partial search in the URL section, you don't need the entire url. don't think we need to change anything, but I suppose if you hit those URLs while on an artist page you could change them manually.
