Topic: What are the true rules concerning comic posting?

Posted under General

First I thought that the only rule was that nobody could post a paid comic or doujin here, but I see many paid doujins here and the reason I've seen for it was that "as long as it's an old one, it's okay to post", but I don't know if it's true or not.

Then I learned that I can't post comics when the artists says they don't want to see their work anywhere else other than the website they chose to post. This is a fair rule.

After that I learned that I can't post FREE comics from private own domains. This is a bizarre rule, but fine.

And now I discover that, for some reason, comics posted on smackjeeves, which is a free website full of free comics, are also a no-no here. Why? What is the difference between smackjeeves and deviantart or tumblr? Aren't they the same thing in principle? A free website to host your stuff? It's not privately owned by the artists whose comics I have tried to post and, AGAIN, it's free to register and free to post just like deviantart (and tumblr too, I think).

I would like an answer for this. I hate having to waste my time posting stuff only to have it taken down without having a freaking reason for it. If a mod wants t delete, they should at least PM the person posting saying why the stuff was taken down.

Feel free to look up our guidelines and DNP once again to refresh your memory:

Old rule was that if the paid content is two years old, it's allright to be posted.
This rule changed quite recently that all paid content is DNP forever, so if you see clearly paid material still up on the site, feel free to flag it as such. There's simply no way that staff is able to micromanage over million posts.

This has nothing to do with the site and we approve content no matter how many times there's "don't repost elsewhere" written on the comic and sources.
Of course this is seen as dick move and artist is more than free to use our takedown tool to quickly take the upload down.

I also see this rule bit outdated right now, but the main point of this is to
A) stop stealing valuable traffic from webcomic creators, as they really often try to funnel views to their primary source and most likely get ad revenue. (This is the reason why I said this rule to be kinda outdated, considering how many are opting to use third party services for cheaper hosting and better income)
B) avoid massive spam kind of content from comics that can update even daily, generating hundreds and thousands of new posts with ease.

Like I mentioned above, some artists have opted to use dedicated services like taptastic and smackjeeves instead of their own domain, but their goals are still the same and we still do not want to steal their traffic. Services like tumblr and deviantart will not generate revenue from views.

As for messaging, staff is handling so much content daily and we are still sometimes running behind, so writing nice dmails about everything even though would be nicer, is also huge timesink. Also the deletion reason will always tell the reason why it's deleted and whoever handled deletion should also be able to respond possible dmails about the situation.

So all artists at smackjeeves get money from the website? I thought it was the same as deviantart. I have an account at smackjeeves and if I start posting stuff I can get money automatically?

if the problem is stealing ad revenue from the website itself and not from the artist, shouldn't this rule also apply to furaffinity stuff?

I'm still at a loss for what to do about a certain comic.

Valsalia's Out Of Placers comic, specifically. It's hosted on a private domain thing, but it's also up on Furaffinity, and furthermore I got permission from the artist to post it here.

I was told by NotMeNotYou that it would be fine to post it up because I got permission, then was told "hey actually hold on a bit on that."

All of this began four or five months ago now and I still haven't heard anything back. I tried asking for an update but heard nothing back.

I wasn't going to mention it, but since a related topic popped up anyway... What's going on with all of this then?

Since it's on FA (+permission) post it.

Is the DA version better than the FA version? The resolution and picture quality in particular; if yes then use that instead, and if no then use FA instead.

But if any are not downloadable for some reason, you can include source links to other artist sources. Use the page instead of the account, though, since there is a hard limit of 5 sources in a source field.

(That moment when you have to edit 5 times to prevent a run-on paragraph...)

Actually, I was talking about a comic which was posted on smackjeeves. Can I post the deviantart version of it since the smackjeeves version is off limits?

Those versions are identical and you did not provide deviantart source, so staff handled the posts with information you had provided.
There's many good reasons why source field can have up to 5 URLs, this is one of them.

This changes from service to service, but all services do have some level of customizeability like regular websites (up to having own domain at which point we get to our guidelines) and some sort of revenue option. I know taptastic best and that has both ad revenue and tipping options. Smackjeeves has patreon integration and yearly plan to have either ad free or own ads running on your stuff.

Which is why I said earlier that the guideline for webcomics feels somewhat outdated as many of webcomic creators are now part of these centralized websites rather than buying their own sites to host stuff.

Actually yes. Deviantart source is of higher quality, so the pages you already uploaded needs to be replaced with the variation from deviantart.

I guess?

Doesn't really seem like anyone's objecting, at least.

Did I say something wrong? I was just thanking the guy. It wasn't him who re-uploaded the comic?
